Hello,
it is already christmas and it has been 4 years since I started this blog. It was around this time that we were having elections here in Kenya and evil unleashed over this country. But we thank God for the peace we have been having since the time a peace deal was brokered by Kofi Annan early 2008.
Just looking back this year tells us how much has happened in the region of East Africa. The New Sudan became an independent nation. Al Shabab has been dealt with and is being dealt with by Kenyan troops which marched into the southern part of the country to wipe out Terrorism. Some repercussions were felt here in Kenya when granates blew up in different parts of the country and killed quite a number of innocent people. And what terrorism tries to achieve has been achieved. People are scared and there are police checks and security checks in many places which never had any security concerns before.
We just had some time off and were able to go down to Mombasa and the picture of the minarett is from the oldest mosque in East africa. During that time I was able to read a couple of books and one of the books I read is written by a Somali lady by the name Ayaan Ali Hirsi. The latest book is called "Nomad" where she gives account of her upbringing as a Muslim girl and how Islam is preventing people from making informed decisions because there is simply no freedom for the individual. It is a good read and recommendable for everyone who wants to understand the problems immigrants face when they come to the west. And also the perception us westerners have when dealing with immigrants especially from Muslim countries.

Hallo,

Nach einer Weile des Schweigens ein kurzer update aus unserem Ergehen hier in Deutschland. Gegen Ende Maerz sind Doerte und ich mit den Kindern losgezogen. Wir hatten einen kurzen zwischenstopp in Cairo und konnten die wunderschoenen Pyramiden ansehen und sie sogar umreiten mit Pferden bzw. Kamelen.
Danach sind wir weiter nach Zuerich und haben uns dann so langsam richtung Norden vorgearbeitet. Auf jeder Station sind uns liebe Menschen begegenet und wir haben unglaublich viele schoene Begegnungen schon erlebt und sind schon sehr reich beschenkt worden.
Unsere Kinder mussten aber schon bald wieder zurueck weil die Schule in Kenya wieder anfing. Sie waren dann auch dankbar dass sie wieder in ihren gewohnten Alltag zurueck konnten. Sie leben jetzt im Moment als Internatskinder und scheinen das wohl recht zu geniessen.
Wir sind im Moment in unserer alten Heimat Velbert und sind recht eifrig Bekannte und Freunde und Gemeinden besuchen. Das macht viel Freude und gibt uns Einblicke in das Leben in Deutschland den wir so gar nicht mehr haben.

Hello,
for now a little more than a month Dorothy and I are in Germany. The kids left us about 2 weeks ago to go back to school at RVA.
We are busy visiting friends and relatives here in Germany. We have travelled many many miles and saw wonderful friends and were able to reconnect with churches and share about the Lords work in Africa.
We have the most beautiful weather it is hot and it hasn't rained in the whole time we have been here. It is actually summertime even though it shouldn't be that hot according to the weather patterns which apply here.
It is good to be back and to see the Lords work in this part of the world.

Hallo,
Lange nichts mehr geschrieben in diesem forum. Da wir kurz vor unserer Abreise nach Deutschland stehen wollte ich doch noch kurz ein update schicken.
Wir fliegen am Donnerstag ueber kairo nach Zuerich. Ein paar Tage wollen wir in kairo bleiben um dort mit Freunden von unseren Freunden uns Aegypten ein wenig anzuschauen und um zu sehen wie die revolution dort sich auf das Leben der Aegypter ausgewirkt hat und es sich immer noch lange auswirken wird.
An Hanna-Joys Geburtstag werden wir dann wohl in Zuerich landen und ein bisschen zeit mit Freunden verbringen die frueher mit uns in Kijabe gewohnt und gearbeitet hatten. Von da aus geht es dann in alle landesteile mit mehr oder weniger kurzen zwischenstopps.
Unsere Kinder werden uns dann schon bald wieder verlassen und zurueck nach Hause fliegen, was fuer sie ja in kenia ist. Sie muessen dann mit ihrer Schule weitermachen waehrend wir in Deutschland noch unterwegs sein werden. Fuer Joas Benjamin wird es das erste mal sein dass er im internat untergebracht sein wird, und er findet das ziemlich aufregend. Hanna-Joy hat das schon einmal gemacht und findet es eigentlich ziemlich cool.
Jetzt sind wir im packstress und versuchen an alles zu denken, bevor es losgeht. Das Papier fuer die mastersarbeit ist weitgehend fertig geschrieben und ich kann mich jetzt wieder auf andere Dinge konzentrieren. Die Hauptkonzentration geht jetzt auf den heimataufenthalt.
Irgendwie immer wieder aufregend wenn man laenger nicht mehr in seinem eigenen Heimatland war. Allein das autofahren auf der falschen Seite der fahrbahn und viele andere kleine dinge.

Hello,
This time I won't say how sorry I am that I didn't write for such a long time. I guess I must have been caught up between my studies and the christmas activities, work in the Hospital and so on.
But the truth is, I have neglected my blog longer than ever before. The blog had it's 3rd anniversary just a couple of weeks ago. The same time we remembered the violence which broke out and messed up the lives of many people here in Kenya.
Many have gone back to their normal lives but many others still live in makeshift homes, tents and try to survive on less than $1 in a day.
How the wounds of trauma are healing deep inside only God knows.
The children went back to school just two weeks ago and they found their daily routine very quickly. Dorothy is busy preparing for a workshop in Addis Abeba beginning of February and I am busy writing my final paper for my Master Research Paper. There is a lot to juggle but God is faithful in everything.
Besides all these things we are also preparing our Home assignment which is coming in just a few months from now. We are leaving for Germany by the end of March and then will stay together with our children until end of April. Then we have to put them on a plane back to Kenya and we continue with our tour through Germany until the beginning of June. On the 2nd of June we have our annual missions conference and right after that we are hoping to be back in Kenya so that we can join our children again.
It will be a busy time but we are also looking forward to seeing our friends and family again after about 2 and a half years.

Es ist ganz schoen lange her seitdem ich zum letzten mal einen Beitrag geschrieben habe. Das kommt wohl hauptsaechlich daher dass ich gerade an meiner Thesis fuer meine masters arbeit schreibe und daher sehr viel am computer schreibe und forsche und von daher leider die wichtigen Dinge wie unsere Freunde am laufenden zu halten, vernachlaessige.
Die Hauptfrage der ich nachgehe in meiner Arbeit, welchen Eindruck machen wir auf die Besucher von der anderen Seite der Grenze, die unsere Dienste in Anspruch nehmen. Immerhin haben wir taeglich 80 - 100 Besucher die ethnisch Som s sind. Nicht alle sind Patienten, aber in dieser Kultur kommt einer der krank ist nicht allein zum Arzt, sondern hat mindestens ein und manchmal 3 Freunde oder Verwandte mit dabei. Viele von den Gaesten die zu uns kommen sind dann auch mit relativ viel Zeit da, weil in Kenia auch nichts wirklich schnell geht. So sitzt man dann oft auch be einer Tasse Tee und diskutiert Dinge des taeglichen Lebens, was gerade im Nachbarland laeuft, wo gerade wer um welche Machtposition kaempft, wie man vielleicht am besten aus Afrika rauskommt, und welches Visum am meisten verspricht. Bei alledem kommt man nie am Reden ueber Gott rum, an irgendeiner Stelle kommt man auf ihn zurueck, der letztendlich alles kontrolliert und auch ueber den einzelnen Menschen bestimmt. Auchh wenn es mal hitzige Debatten sind, freut man sich doch am Ende, dass man sich wieder ein bisschen naeher gekommen ist und sich mehr versteht.
Waehrend wir uns auf dieser Ebene verstehen, geht auf der anderen Seite ein unglaublich brutaler Krieg vor sich, wo taeglich Leben eingebuesst werden und Familien zerstoert werden. Viele haben inzwischen die Hoffnung auf einen Frieden und Wiederherstellung des Landes aufgegeben und sind quasi zwischen Baum und Borke, koennen nicht vor und nicht zurueck. Fuer viele ein ganz traumatisierendes Erlebnis, weil 20 Jahre eben wie eine Ewigkeit sind, und so lange waehrt schon der Krieg.
Wir reden weiterhin von dem Prinz des Friedens der in der Lage ist selbst ein Chaosinferno wie Somalia wieder zu einem bewohnbaren Platz zu machen.
Manche wollen die Botschaft hoeren, andere machen sich lustig drueber, aber in der Zwischenzeit wachsen tiefe und echte Beziehungen zwischen vielen und uns die wir hier im Hospital arbeiten.

Hi there,
Oh my, it has been months since I have written. I really want to apologize to those who check my blog on a regular basis and don't find any update in such a long time.
What happens is that I am working on my masters thesis and spend so much time at the computer doing research and writing that I hardly find any time to do the important things like keeping our friends updated.
Actually what I am researching on is the effect the mission hospital I am working at is having on our wonderful people from the other side of the border. We have a daily influx of Som s in our hospital of up to 80 - 100 a day that is patients plus their friends and relatives who usually come along. The fact is that in most cases there is at least one person who comes along with the one who is sick, sometimes there are three who give the moral support. Many come multiple times because they have established the trust and wouldn't want to be seen by any other medical health care centre. For us here it is a wonderful opportunity to take time with them, sit under a tree and share about life in general, the war in Somalia, the current events in the places they immediately come from. And all those things usually very naturally lead to a discussion about the ultimate maker of all things, that is God which we all agree on. Sometimes heated discussions develop from there but almost always lead to a better understanding of one another and the appreciation of the other despite the differences we may be having.
As the war on the other side keeps on taking people's lives and leaves families torn apart and loved ones missing or being taken to other parts of the world, many people look at their situation and ask questions. They ask very serious questions, will there ever be peace again in Somalia, has God cursed that nation and will I ever get out of Africa so that I can build my life again?
The only thing we can point people at over and over again is the symbol for peace and reconciliation. There is only one person who will ever be able to reconcile the warring fractions of that land and only one person who can ever fill that empty spot in those individuals lives.

Hallo,

diese Woche hatten wir unseren Missionsdirektor zu Besuch und hatten gute Gelegenheit mal alles durchzusprechen und Richtung zu korrigieren wo Korrektur notwendig war. Natuerlich haben wir ueber ihn auch etwas ueber die Heimat erfahren was auch sehr schoen war. Die Frau die uns etwas im Haushalt hilft, sagte dann als Siegfried wieder wegfuhr, dass jetzt der Vater wieder weg ist. Ich fand das eine sehr schoene Art den Direktor zu beschreiben. Nicht der Boss sondern der Vater war zu Besuch und ich meinte das hatte sie wirklich schoen getroffen. Aber natuerlich muss das Leben wieder weiter gehen und wir muessen unseren Verantwortlichkeiten nachgehen.

So hatte ich gleich am folgenden Tag wieder eine Gelegenheit mein Somali ghetto in Nairobi zu besuchen. Es ist fuer mich immer etwas was mir energie gibt und mich aufbaut wenn ich da sein kann, wo meine Freunde sind, wo mich viele kennen, und nachfragen wo man denn solange gewesen ist, wenn ich mal einige Wochen keine Gelegenheit hatte da zusein.

Am Anfang der Woche kam ein Vater mit seiner Familie bei uns im Krankenhaus an, wo beide kleinen Jungs schwere Anomalien haben und dringend Hilfe brauchen. Ich kannte die Mutter und die Kinder schon laenger, aber jetzt kam der Vater, nachdem er sein Haus zuhause in Somalia verkauft hatte. Ich konnte mit der Familie Zeit verbringen und ihnen helfen den Doktor zu sehen und ihm helfen die Diagnose zu verstehen und die daraus entstehenden Konsequenzen.

Der Daddy war so dankbar dass er unbedingt etwas fuer uns tun wollte und als wir dann im Somali ghetto ankamen wollte er uns gerne zum Essen einladen, was wir dann auch gerne annahmen.

Im Anschluss daran sind wir dann durch den Matsch und Abwasser zu seiner gemieteten Wohnung und konnten fuer ihn und seine Familie beten und im namen Jesu fuer eine loesung bitten die ueber alle menschlichen Moeglichkeiten hinausgeht. Es ist fuer uns erstaunlich wie sich die Wohnungstueren oeffnen, die sonst geschlossen bleiben fuer andersglaeubige und wie hoch die Bereitschaft ist Gebet zu empfangen von Menschen die sie an sich meiden sollten, ginge es nach der Lehre die sie von ihren Lehrern empfangen.

So war es ein reicher Tag, wo wir Menschen mit dem Koenig der Koenige bekanntmachen konnten.

hello again,

This week we had a visit from our german director in Velbert and it was just nice to be together and talk things through and get some direction in areas where we felt we needed some guidance. The Kenyan lady who helps us around the house, said that now the father has left again for another mission. I thought to myself it was really a nice way of referring to the director, not a boss but a father who takes care of his flock. Of course he had to leave and life has to continue and we have to get on with our daily responsibilities.

The following day I had a chance to visit my beloved Somali ghetto in Nairobi. I don't know why but it always energizes me and gives me joy to be there with my friends and sometimes get some of those delicious dishes which only the Somalis can prepare. The funny thing is that is an absolute mess and you really need a four wheel drive to get through the streets of that section because the sewage system is totally out of order and it stinks wherever one goes. But I always have the feeling that it is the part of town where I somehow belong because people just know me and ask me where I have been if I didn't show up for a couple of weeks.

Anyway this time we wanted to visit with one of the friends you just came out of Somalia to look after his wife and children who came a bit earlier because of some severe anomalies with the children. First I took care of him in our hospital, let him to the right doctor and just helped him to understand the diagnose the doctor was trying to tell him and just treated him in a friendly manner. That was enough reason for this gentleman to take us out to a nice restaurant and feet us with camel meat, spaghetti and rice. We accepted his offer gladly and with much appreciation but also felt that we needed to see his wife and kids at his rented home. When we reached there, going through the mud and sewage, we were offered a chance to make a prayer for the family and especially for these troubled kids. It was one way for us to introduce Jesus to this extremely hospitable family and ask him on their behalf to do good to them and bring healing into their situation.

Hallo,
Doerte und ich waren heute zu einer Vor - Hochzeitsfeier in einem wundershoenen Gebiet gar nicht weit von Kijabe entfernt. Es liegt noch mal einige Hoehenmeter ueber Kijabe, vielleicht bei 2.100 metern. Es ist eine super fruchtbare Gegend und jetzt nach dem vielen Regen ist alles gruen und satt. Vor allem nach den vielen Monaten der Duerre und des Hungerns ist jetzt Zeit und Musse zum Feiern und zum Tanzen. Bei dem Bild unten seht Ihr mich tanzen, was ich gar nicht so oft mache. Die Menschen freuen sich dass Essen wieder erschwinglich ist und man sich auch wieder satt essen kann. Das war lange Zeit nicht der fall.
Die Veranstaltung war auf der kleinen Farm unseres Freundes, der aus der Somali Kultur kommt und sich fast vollstaendig in die Gastkultur der Kikuyu integriert hat. Er spricht die Sprache fliessend, ist mit einer Kikuyu verheiratet und hat seine eigene kleine Farm wo er sich selber versorgt. Das ist in der Somalikultur eher ungewoehnlich dass jemand Spass an der Gartenarbeit hat.
Es ging also um eine Vor-Feier zur Hochzeit, das bedeutet dass man Geld zusammenlegt um die teure Hochzeit die dann einige Wochen spaeter stattfindet, zu finanzieren. So kommen dann Nachbarn und Freunde zusammen, zum Essen, zum tanzen und feiern und auch um Geld zusammen zulegen und somit teil zu haben an dem wichtigen Ereigniss.
Waehrend der Veranstaltung wurden wir dann rausgerufen weil in der Nachbarschaft eine Fruehgeburt hatte und dringend ins Krankenhaus musste. So haben wir sie dann ins Auto gepackt mit 9 anderen und haben sie ueber total schlechte Wege die z. T. durch tiefe Schlammloecher erschwerte Bedingungen lieferten, ins Krankenhaus gebracht. Ohne vierradantrieb waeren wir da nicht weit gekommen. Sie und wir kamen heil an.

Hello,

Today, Dorothy and I went to a place not very far from Kijabe, probably around 20 kms, to a wedding, or what they call around here a pre-wedding. The location was the most beautiful place. It is a farming area with gardens full of vegetables of all sorts. The last couple of months we have received so much rain that everything is lush and green and the food prices have dropped significantly. There are many reasons to be joyful and especially when it comes to weddings people really like to dance and to express their joy. That picture is all about that joy and happiness when things are getting a bit lighter as usual. I remember a few months ago I was writing about drought and hardship but with the rains some of those struggles have eased and life is much more bearable now.

The friend we visited comes from the Somali community but married a lady from the Kikuyu tribe who are mainly farmers. Our friend almost totally assimilated into the Kikuyu culture, he speaks the language fluently and adopted farming as his lifestyle which usually is not much part of the culture where he comes from.

I said we went to a pre-wedding, that means that friends, relatives and well wishers get together, eat and give money towards the wedding which may take place a few weeks or so later. That is one way for many to help participate in the event.

During the occasion today we were told that a lady in the neighbourhood had a miscarriage after 4 month of pregnancy and needed to get to the Hospital urgently. There were no cars around and almost no road for that matter. Thank God for a wheel drive, we got her plus 9 other people in the car safely to the Hospital.

Hello,

just a few days ago we celebrated Hanna-Joys 15th birthday, as you can see. A happy mom and a happy daughter together in our home here in Kijabe, Kenya. We wish some of you could have joined us to eat some cake together. A special gift for Hanna-Joy was the beginning of easter vacation on the same day. The kids are a bit free now, sleep in and do things they enjoy for which they don't find time during the school term.

Even for us parents the easter break comes in the right time. We had a very busy first quarter of the year here in the Hospital. We did a number of teachings, trips to different places in Kenya, and the studies have kept us quite busy. Added responsibilities within our organization here also make us travel more, trips to Nairobi are becoming more frequent. So we thank God not only for the little rest but really for what Easter is all about. That Jesus rose from the dead contains the power to forgive. And we see so much unforgiveness around us, here in this country, in Somalia, Sudan. We pray that Jesus power of resurrection may transform the nations.

Today is good friday and we remember the suffering and death of our Lord Jesus Christ. In the morning we took time to meditate on what it means that one paid the price for our sins and went ahead and took the punishment on our behalf. It is an amazing gift and we really appreciate Jesus so much for what he did for us all.

What Jesus did on the cross and what happened on that following Sunday is what motivates us to continue to preach that Gospel of reconciliation to the nations which are without the knowledge of a saviour who can break that cycle of revenge and retaliation.

Hallo,
tut mir echt leid, dass ich unseren blog jetzt so einige Wochen verwaist zurueckgelassen habe. Vor allem fuer die, die regelmaessig nachschauen, moechte ich sagen, dass mir das leid tut, also bitte nicht aufhoeren damit uns auf unserem blog zu besuchen. Irgendwie war es echt busy die letzten Wochen, und ich hab mir nicht die Zeit genommen mich hinzusetzen um zu schreiben. Obwohl es mir doch wichtig ist, Euch auf dem laufenden zu halten. Wir haben gerade eine ganze Reihen von verschiedenen Seminaren und meetings fast gleichzeitig im Krankenhaus am laufen. Das meiste geht um die Volksgruppe die uns am naechsten ist. Ein Seminar heisst: Den anderen verstehen.
Da geht es darum, den Mitarbeitern nahe zu bringen, dass wir es mit einem Volk zu tun haben, die anders sind, aber auch Menschen sind und erreicht werden wollen. Das groesste Ziel ist es natuerlich so viele wie moeglich mit unserem besten Freund vertraut zu machen, und dafuer brauchen wir moeglichst viele Menschen, die diesen Freund schon kennen und ihm vertrauen. So versuchen wir die Barrieren abzubauen, die zwischen den Kulturen herrschen.
Daneben laufen noch viele andere meetings wo wir entweder Kulturverstaendnis rueberbringen, oder erklaeren was sich hinter der Religion des Islam verbirgt. Viele kommen dann mit tollen Aha Erlebnissen aus den Seminaren raus und wollen mehr lernen und sich engagieren auf den andren zuzugehen und mit ihm zu teilen.
Das was wieder zumindest ein Lebenszeichen von uns. Leider hab ich keine Bilder, beim naechsten mal will ich ein paar Bilder dazuhaengen,damit ihr wieder etwas mitbekommt fuers Auge.

Hello,
I am really sorry that I haven't updated our blog for quite a few weeks now. For those who check regularly, accept my apologies. We are doing quite fine here in Kenya but life has been busy lately and to get the time to sit down and write about what is going on didn't come. I guess one has to take time to do what is important. And I do feel it is important to keep you wonderful people updated. Just a few minutes ago I finished one of my assignments which I have to write for my studies. And some of them really take a lot of time if you want to get good grades. I am still enjoying the school, this time it is a 10 weeks course in 'Theology of Leadership'. I am really amazed at how practical the whole course is for me in what I am doing here in Kenya.
By the way, we are having courses introduced here in the Hospital: Understanding others.
That is meant for Hospital staff to be better equipped to work with the ever growing influx of Somali patients to our Hospital. It touches on topics such as culture, religion and on how we can do better as a Hospital so that they can come closer to us and also understand who our best friend is. We want to introduce Jesus to as many people as possible, and in order to do that we do need as many people as possible.

Hallo,
Im englischen Teil meines blogs habe ich einen langen Artikel reinkopiert, der gestern in der Presse erschienen ist. Es geht um das Gesicht eines Krieges der unbemerkt von der Weltoeffentlichkeit von statten geht und unendliches Leid fordert. Viele der am staerksten betroffenen Menschen sind Kinder. So wie der kleine 8-jaehrige Ahmed der ins Kreuzfeuer von Milizen geraten war und dabei eine Kugel sein Gesicht durchschlagen hat, dabei die Nase, das rechte Auge und noch viel mehr zerstoert hat. Als er zum ersten mal bei uns ins Krankenhaus kam verdrehte es mir den magen und ich konnte kaum glauben was ich sah. Dazu war er nicht der einzige, sondern ein anderes Kind kam mit, das ebenfalls eine Kugel im Gesicht hatte und den Mund zerfetzt bekommen hatte.
Nun kam aber der kleine Ahmed wieder und war soweit, dass seine Nase wieder hergestellt werden sollte, was auch sehr gut lief, der Plastic chirurg war sehr zufrieden mit seiner Arbeit und der Patient war stabil. Am Mittwoch abend wurde ich gegen 6 Uhr in die Intensiv station gerufen um bei der Mutter zu sein, weil man merkte dass etwas nicht stimmte. Selbst die Aerzte rauften sich die Haare, weil man damit absolut nicht rechnete.

Die Mutter, die von der gleichen Kugel die letztendlich ihren Sohn getoetet hatnoch die Narbe des Streifschusses, als sie versucht hat ihren Sohn zu schuetzen. Die Hilflosigkeit dieser Frau gegen die Grausamkeit des Krieges hat zutiefst auf mich gewirkt.

NAIROBI, Kenya - A Somali boy who was horribly disfigured months ago by a stray bullet in Somalia's violent capital has died just days after undergoing reconstructive surgery in neighboring Kenya, his doctors said Thursday.
The plight of 8-year-old Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud was reported by The Associated Press in November in a story, photos and video, two months after he was shot in Mogadishu. Ahmed personified the civilian toll in the brutal conflict in Somalia and drew offers of aid from around the world. The bullet tore through his cheekbones, nose and mouth and destroyed his right eye.
Dr. Peter Nthumba said Ahmed died late Wednesday of intestinal bleeding that may have been caused by an ulcer or stress. Nthumba operated on the boy on Monday in the Kenyan capital.
Relatives and well-wishers said they were shocked by the sudden death of Ahmed, a cheerful child who liked playing with a toy helicopter and spent time reading the Quran in his hospital bed. Doctors said the operation had gone well.
His heartbroken mother, Safi Mohamed Shidane, said that she had not expected her son's life would end.
"I was hoping to pick up a healthy son, who can breathe through his nose like others," Shidane said as tears ran down her cheeks. "But God said otherwise. It is God's will. Today I'm collecting his body."
Casualty of warWhen a U.S.-based aid group — Healing the Children of Minnesota — flew Ahmed to Kenya in October, the plan was to take him overseas. The group already had contacted hospitals in the U.S., Britain, Italy and Mexico. But the group, funded mainly by contributions from Somali immigrants, eventually opted for Ahmed to be operated on at Kijabe Hospital in Kenya. The group has helped 56 other Somali war victims, mostly children, get medical care, said Abdi Gaal, its executive director.
Somalia's capital sees near-daily bloodshed as a powerful insurgent group with links to al-Qaida tries to overthrow the fragile U.N.-backed government.
Last year, his mother told AP that a barrage of bullets poured out from the presidential palace and one struck her son as they walked home from a Mogadishu market on Sept. 24.
Unlike Afghanistan and Iraq, there are few images of the bloodshed in Somalia, where thousands of children have been casualties without the world knowing. Most foreign journalists stay away because of the danger. An AP photographer was present right after Ahmed was shot and took pictures of the bleeding boy as he was carried away by two bystanders. During the weeks that followed, AP journalists kept in touch with Ahmed and his mother.

'Another tragic loss'Last year, Kijabe Hospital doctors did what they could to stitch together parts of his face and recommended further specialized surgery to restore his nose and reconstruct the upper lip and damaged cheekbone.
On Monday, Nthumba removed skin from Ahmed's left hand and leg and stitched it at the place his nose once was as part of a series of operations to restore his face.
The doctor had been planning to discharge Ahmed from the intensive care unit on Thursday but the previous day, the boy suddenly suffered massive intestinal bleeding that was not believed to be a complication of the surgery, said Nthumba.
"Within 30 minutes the boy collapsed and we could not resuscitate him," he said.

Hello,
As I am waiting for the Vice President of Kenya to visit our Hospital I find some time to write a little update on our lives here in this country. Three hours after the official arrival time we are still waiting for that man to show up and address the staff of the Hospital. But it seems time doesn't really matter, therefore we are waiting and the work is interrupted by the announcement of the visitation. We hope that he will at least fulfill his promise and come after exercising a lot of patience. Expectations are high, what will he bring, what will he say. Will he do something to improve the infrastructure for our Hospital, will he fix the road leading to our place which is almost totally worn out, and needs to be recarpeted. Will he bring a better power supply to our station so that we don't suffer frequent power outages as we do now? A lot of pressure is put upon those guys. How much do they still feel of what the common man in the country feels? We are grateful that at least he comes to visit, so that the government can be aware of what is happening here and to what extent important medical work is being carried out. The needs of a Hospital of that size which almost completely depends on donations from outside the country are huge. The resources in the country are big and it would be great if some of the basic needs could be covered internally.

Bevor das alte Jahr 2009 zu ende geht und wir das neue Jahr 2010 einlaeuten moechte ich noch diesen einen blog eintrag losschicken. Waehrend ich schreibe wurde ich erinnert dass ich vor genau 2 Jahren anfing mit diesem blog. Und zwar war das damals aus dem Anlass der Unruhen die durch die Wahlen ausgeloest wurden. Damals drohte das ganze Land zu zerbrechen und in einen Buergerkrieg zu versinken. Fuer etliche Monate war das Land in tiefe Stammesfehden verwickelt und brutalste Gewalt hat dazu gefuehrt, dass tausende getoetet und hunderte von tausenden ihren Besitz verloren haben und um ihr Leben fliehen mussten. Inzwischen hat sich vieles wieder normalisiert, das Leben geht weiter. Nur man sieht ueber das ganze Land verteilt die Lager von Fluechtlingen, die muehsam versuchen sich wieder eine Existenz aufzubauen. Es kommt sehr wenig Hilfe von der Regierung. Es gibt hier so eine Tendenz im Land, dass man einfach weitermacht und so tut, als ob nichts gewesen waere. Das Problem ist nur, dass das nicht wirklich funktioniert, frueher oder spaeter holt einen die Wirklichkeit dann doch wieder ein. Wir hoffen und beten, dass doch noch ordentlich mit den Drahtziehern umgegangen wird und sie zur Verantwortung gezogen werden, so dass Mensche im Lande erkennen, dass es noch Gerechtigkeit gibt.
In der Zwischenzeit ist meine Familie auch wieder komplett. Doerte kam von ihrem Kurztrip nach Deutschland gut wieder zurueck. Es war ein kurzer aber intensiver Besuch und ich glaube sie war froh als sie wieder in Kenya war. Auch Hanna-Joy kam gesund und munter wieder von ihrem Trip nach Mosambique zurueck. Der erste Trip ohne Eltern, und sie hat das ganz gut gemeistert.
Ich bin viele Stunden im krankenhaus und hoere mir viele Geschichten an aus einem Land wo nur Nacht zu herrschen scheint. Aber es sind nicht die Geschichten aus tausendundeinernacht, sondern es wirkt so als ob auch dort der Teufel los ist. Ich frag mich, wer diese Geschichten ueberhaupt noch hoeren will. Eine Frau erzaehlte mir gestern, was momentan in Mogadishu laeuft. Maedchen die Lippenstift tragen, werden die Lippen abgeschnitten, Zivilisten, die mit ihren Angehoerigen ausserhalb reden, werden die Ohren abgeschnitten, damit sie keine Informationen mehr weitergeben koennen. Und viele andere unglaubliche Dinge hoeren wir von dem Land in unserem Osten.
Waehrend wir das neue Jahr willkommen heissen, wollen wir beten, dass Gott der allein Frieden geben kann, dieses Land speziell besucht und Erneuerung der Herzen schenkt.

Hello,
This may be the last blogentry for this year. Isn't it amazing how fast this year has gone by? So many things were in it. When I look back a little further I realize now that it is exactly two years since I started my blog, that was the time we had the elections here in Kenya and it seemed as if the devil himself was loose. People were killing one another and hundreds of thousands of people were displaced from their homesteads and farms. Of course many things went back to normal and life goes on as usual except of the many camps which are dotting the landscape all over the country. That is still a reminder that things aren't completely back to normal and terrible things had happened. How the healing process is going on between the tribes and fractions is hard to say. People here have a tendency of covering up and pretending that nothing really has happened only to be caught by it at a later time. We are praying for a good way of dealing with the issues and that those who are responsible for the atrocities would be tried and convicted so that the citizens realize that you can not just get away with any kind of crime.
My family is all back together here in Kenya again. Dorothy had a short trip to Germany to visit family, all went well and I believe she had a really good time and she had many stories to tell. I think she was glad to be back in Kenya. Hanna-Joy had a great time in Mozambique she came back just a day before her mom got back. It was her first trip alone and she managed pretty well.
For me, I am busy in the Hospital, listening to stories from the land in Anarchy which lies to our east. I could enter stories here in the blog, but sometimes I wonder who wants to hear and listen to those brutal and inhumane stories. Yesterday I was talking to one lady who came from Mogadishu not long ago. She narrated that girls who are wearing lipsticks are getting their lips cut off. First time I ever heard that one. People who are talking over the phone to people outside the country and give out news of what is happening in the land are having their ears cut off. And the list goes on and on and it is getting more brutal every day. We just feel that this land with its people who are still remaining in the land needs the God who loves people more than anything and therefore we need to pray that God would do something extraordinary to its people.

Hallo,
bin ein wenig hinterher mit meinen blogs, moechte Euch aber doch kurz informieren. Am Wochenende war ich viel am Flughafen denn zuerst flog Doerte nach Deutschland. Sie wurde von ihrer Tante zum 70igsten Geburtstag eingeladen. Die Tante ist kinderlos und wuenschte sich sehr, dass ihr Patenkind bei dieser Feier dabei ist. Nach langem hin und her hat Doerte sich dann doch entschlossen zu fliegen. Das Angebot der Tante das Ticket zu uebernehmen hat die Entscheidung dann doch wesentlich erleichtert. So verbringt sie jetzt die Tage mit ihrer Verwandtschaft und reist einmal quer durch Deutschland. Am Samstag musste ich dann noch einmal zum Flughafen um Hanna-Joy abzusetzen, die in die entgegengesetzte Richtung reiste. Sie wurde von ihrer Freundin nach Mosambique eingeladen. So flog sie jetzt zum ersten mal alleine, ich hab nur mit ihr eingecheckt und von da an war sie ganz allein auf sich gestellt. Aber sie hat schon geschrieben, dass alles gut ging.
Wir hatten ja auch Besuch die letzten zwei, drei Wochen. Freunde aus unsere Gemeinde kamen uns besuchen und haben einiges kennengelernt, von dem was unser Leben hier ausmacht. Selber sehen macht schon einen sehr grossen Unterschied. Man kann viel versuchen zu erklaeren und zu schreiben. Aber wenn man dann die Gerueche selber wahrnimmt und das Leben selber erlebt ist das schon was anderes. Unsere Besucher kamen zu einer zeit wo es richtig schoen ist im Land, weil doch einige Plaetze im Land Regen erhalten haben. Vieles konnten wir zusammen diskutieren und es war wie ein Gruss aus der Heimat.

Just a quick update on the last few days in our lives here in Kenya. The days have been marked with a mass exodus. All my women have left the country for about two weeks. Dorothy was invited to join her aunties 70th birthday celebration in Germany, near Nuernberg. The auntie has no kids, so she decided to bring her niece to make the celebration a little more family like. She volunteered to pay for the ticket which made the decision a little easier. Right now, Dorothy is with her sister and her father, updating them on our lives here in Kenya and also getting updated on what is happening in their lives. She will be enjoying a lot of christmas treats.
Hanna-Joy also had a chance to travel, but not with Mommy. This time she had an invitation to join one of her best friends in Mozambique over the christmas holidays. I took her to the airport, got her checked in and said kwaheri, which is the Kiswaheli word for good bye. Then I was left alone with my son, and we wanted to do a few fun things together and went camping in one of the lesser known parks here in Kenya. We hiked, ate beans out of the can and had a good time together.
Until last week we had visitors from our home church and home office. We showed them around our ministry places as well as places of interest here in this beautiful country. I think our visitors picked the best time possible, because everything was green and lush and the wildlife was extremely healthy and well. We travelled a lot, but it was also good for us to have our people in our place, so that they can get a better feel for what we are doing here and what the nature of our work is all about. Feeling is better than just reading an email. Many things explain themselves once you are in the actual situation.
We thank God for the time we had with our visitors and for the blessings they were to us.

Samstag in Nairobi

Es kommt selten vor dass ich Samstags in Nairobi bin. Heute nachmittag sitze ich in der Buecherei der Pan African Christian University und arbeite noch an einigen Aufsaetzen die ich schreiben muss. Ich bin seit einiger Zeit Student und arbeite an einem Degree Program der mit einem Masters in geistlicher Leiterschaft endet. Der ganze Kurs dauert 2 1/2 Jahre wobei aber nur einige Wochen im Jahr auf dem Campus sind. Viele Kurse werden als Internet klassenzimmer angeboten. So kann man das Studium relativ gut nebenbei machen. Diese Woche geht es um Strategische Leiterschaft, was vom timing her sehr interessant ist, denn in beiden Organisationen in denen ich involviert bin geht es gerade genau darum. Im Krankenhaus haben wir erst vor einigen Wochen den Strategieplan fuer die naechsten 10 Jahre mit einer grossen Feier vorgestellt. Und in der M ission arbeiten wir im moment daran wie wir uns in den naechsten Jahren sehen wollen und welche Strategien wir anwenden koennen, um das gewuenschte Resultat zu sehen. Das ist ziemlich spannend dabei zu sein und zusammen Zukunft zu gestalten. Ich bin dankbar fuer eine Zeit des Lernens, aber vor allem dass es so praktisch ist und direkt wieder in den Dienst zurueckfliesst.
Eigentlich sollten wir heute abend Besuch aus Deutschland bekommen, durch widrige Umstaende kommen Renate und Regina von unserer Gemeinde erst morgen frueh an. So bleibe ich die Nacht noch in Nairobi, fahr morgen frueh zum Flughafen und hol die beiden ab, und bring sie zu uns nach Hause. Wir freuen uns schon auf die Zeit zusammen.

Hello again,
it rarely happens that I am in Nairobi on a Saturday. This week finds me in class at Pan African Christian University where I am taking classes related to issues on Leadership. The course I am taking these few weeks is part of a Masters program here at the University. This course is geared towards a degree in Christian ministry. The particular course I am doing right now is called Strategic Leadership, which is really inspiring and eyeopening in the same time. I found the timing very excellent, because in every aspect of our ministry, we are doing things related to Strategy, trying to find out where we want to go with our organization. What kind of a future do we prefer to see in the next 5 years. And what can we do to achieve the desired results. We are doing strategic planning in our organization right now, and I am so glad that I am in the course so that I can contribute to the discussion to the best of my knowledge. Even in the Hospital where I am working we just completed a Strategic Plan for the next 10 years and it was implemented with a great celebration so that everybody around us could realize that these guys at the Hospital are still alive and kicking and they are moving forward and seemingly even knwo where they want to go.
It has been a great time of growth for me personally and I also realize that a lot of the things I learn go straight back into the ministry, therefore I thank God for the opportunity to learn again and for the practical insights I am getting.

Es ist schon wieder eine Woche her, seit ich wieder aus dem Land im Horn von Afrika zurueck bin. Wir waren vom 18. bis 25. Oktober unterwegs, offiziell um Operationen durchzufuehren. Unsere Aerzte rechneten mit 100 Kiefer Gaumen Spalten Operationen. Letzendlich waren es dann nur 60 und dazu noch einige allgemeine Operationen. Mit ein Hauptanliegen dieser Trips in das mu sl imische Nachbarland ist es Jesus zu repraesentieren.
In den vielen Stunden im Krankenhaus und intensiven Arbeitspensum, 12 Stunden pro Tag, war fuer mich und auch fuer die Aerzte genug Zeit um an den Beziehungen zu arbeiten, was das wichtigste fuer mich war. Meine offizielle Aufgabe war die Logistik, dazu gehoert das fotografieren vor und nach der Operation, und die ganze Datenverarbeitung damit die Ausgaben fuer den Trip wieder reingeholt werden koennen. Ich hatte aber genug Zeit mit den Studenten zu sprechen und ihnen Fragen zu beantworten, die sie schon immer mal stellen wollten, zu Themen, die nichst mit Medizin zu tun haben. Viele hatten noch nie Kontakt mit Christen in irgendeiner Form. Von lockerer Konversation kamen wir ganz oft zu den schweren Fragen des Lebens, wie man in den Himmel kommt, wie mann seine Suenden vergeben bekommen kann und vieles andere mehr.
Daneben war es immer wieder bewegend zu sehen welche impact die Operationen machten, vor allem bei den aelteren, die schon viele Jahre mit ihrer Behinderung Teil der Gesellschaft bzw. am Rande der Gesellschaft waren. Manche, nach oertlicher Betaeubung, guckten in den Spiegel, und griffen an ihren Mund, sprangen vom Op Tisch und umarmten den ersten den sie fassen konnten, aus Freude ueber die massive Veraenderung die ihr Leben durch eine relativ kleine Operation bekommen hat. Am Ende der Woche zeigten wir noch eine powerpoint show mit allen Patienten vorher und nachher. Das war sehr bewegend fuer die offiziellen der Stadt, Buergermeister und Aelteste. Die Patienten kamen aus allen Landesteilen. Einer kam aus Mogadishu, wo er schon mal operiert wurde, allerdings wurde das Krankenhaus waehrend seiner Operation bombardiert und alle Aerzte flohen, so dass er damals nur notduerftig von Krankenschwestern zusammengenaeht wurde. Dieses mal aber, war Friede und er konnte anstaendig operiert werden.

hello there, it has been a few days since I am back from the trip to the north I was talking about. We left on Sunday the 18th and came back on Sunday the 25th, and in between we had a great time of serving the people up there. I was together with two pediatric surgeons and a few other people who could help the surgeons do their work. 58 cleft lips were repaired and a number of other general surgeries were performed. In all of this very busy work schedule, like 12 hours in the operating theater, we were able to form very good relationships. During the times in theater we had still good time to get to know one another and talk about all matter of things including heavy stuff like how one can get to paradise or how one can get his sins forgiven. I really appreciated the opportunity to go to that land which Dorothy and I wante to visit more than 17 years ago for the first time. I was really surprised about the peace and friendliness of its people. Even though we couldn't move even one step outside without 5 armed guards we felt there was absolutely no hostility towards us. It is only that a few years ago a few white people were killed in the town we were in and that is why the government is extremely careful not to have another incident like that. They really need all the help they can get and therefore do whatever they can to keep visitors from harms way.
That land is in such a stark contrast to the land further south which I have described many times here in this blog, as a country which has totally disintegrated and is only a fraction of its former self. The land which I visited enjoys peace and stability and the other part of the country is rocked by mortar attacks every single day. Unbelievable.
Somehow the visit last week showed me that there is still a hope and a future for that nation. If one part of one nation can establish a government and infrastructure why shouldn't the other part be able to do the same.
I am tempted to upload some pictures of two eight year old boys from southern Somalia who had their faces destroyed by bullets. They are here now with us so that their faces can be restructured. I may do it later.

Bevor es fuer mich wieder zum naechsten Trip losgeht, moechte ich Euch noch kurz updaten ueber unser Leben hier in Kenya. Die letzten Naechte hat es geregnet und es sieht aus als koennte es noch mehr regnen. Das bringt Hoffnung fuer die Nation, die von einer Trockenheit betroffen wurde, zusammen mit den anderen Laendern in Ost Afrika, wie es sie seit Menschengedenken noch nie gegeben hat. Die Nahrungsmittelpreise haben Rekordhoehen erreicht und manches ist fuer den Normalbuerger nicht mehr erschwinglich. Mit den zunehmenden oekonomischen Problemen nimmt auch die Unsicherheit im Lande zu. Wir sind dankbar dass wir uns nach wie vor sicher fuehlen trotz allem was in der Gegend um uns herum geschieht.
Vor ein paar Tagen hat ein Feuer 11 Haeuser in Kijabe abgebrannt und wir waren sehr positiv ueberrascht wie schnell Hilfe eintraf und keiner zu Schaden kam, und jeder sofort aufgenommen wurde bis die Haeuser wieder aufgebaut werden. Es handelte sich um einfache Haeuser aus Holz, die wie Zunder brannten. Innerhalb von kurzer Zeit sollen aehnliche Gebaeude wieder aufgerichtet werden, dieses mal aus Wellblech.
Zum Schluss noch kurz die Notiz, dass ich morgen frueh fuer eine Woche ins Nachbarland im Norden fliege wo ein Team von unseren Aerzten Operationen durchfuehren werden. Man rechnet damit dass etwa 100 Kiefer-Gaumen Spalten repariert werden koennen. Nach vielen Jahren wird es fuer mich das erste mal sein, dieses Land zu betreten, ich freu mich schon sehr drauf. Hello,
Just a brief update on what is going on in our lives. Everybody is taking a deep breath around Kenya because we had some good rainfalls here in our area and it seems in many parts of the country as well. It has never been that dry in the area where we live now and the food prices hiked extremely high. If it continues to rain there is hope for a harvest after some months, and life can come back to some kind of normality. With the economic problems the country is facing, there is also a growing sense of insecurity all over the place. We thank God for the way he has protected us up to today.
The other day here in Kijabe a fire has razed away about 11 houses and left the inhabitants homeless. They are being housed by friends and well wishers, a lot of good will has been shown to those affected and help came in immediately. The houses were wooden structures and therefore burned like hay. The new houses will be build out of corregated ironsheets, but at least everybody is going to have a shelter very soon.
One last thing I wanted to share is the upcoming trip to the country to our north, where a group of doctors from Kijabe are going to do operations, that is cleft-lip repairs only. They are estimating about a hundred repairs in this one week. I am looking forward to being part of that group and to be able to step my feet on the ground of the land I was wanting to visit for a long time. Hallo Ihr lieben,

Einige von Euch haben mitbekommen, und deswegen auch migebetet, dass ich mit einem Team an die aethiopische Grenze geflogen bin um dort die gute Nachricht von Jesus Christus weiterzugeben. Wir starteten unseren Trip am Montag morgen und ich war persoenlich dankbar, dafuer, dass wir die Moeglichkeit hatten zu fliegen und nicht die Strecke per Strasse zu machen. Die einfache Strecke betraegt etwa 1200 km und nur etwa 500 km davon sind mit Teerbelag versehen. Die gesamte Gegend dort oben im Norden Kenias ist beruechtigt fuer ihre konstanten Stammesfehden und Feldzuege gegeneinander wo sie sich ihre Rinderherden abnehmen und als Folge viele Menschen ihr Leben lassen. Die kuschitische Bevoelkerung des Nordens ist heissbluetig und lebt in einem rauhen und unwirtlichen Klima was sicherlich viel dazu beitraegt dass Frieden ein Wort ist, das nicht leicht in einem Atemzug mit den Staemmen des Nordens benutzt wird.

Und dennoch war genau diese Gegend das Ziel unserer Mission mit ‚Gospel Fire International‘ einer deutschen Organisation, die es sich auf ihre Fahnen geschrieben hat, das Evangelium auch in schwierige Gebiete zu bringen. Als wir dort ankamen hatten wir in den ersten Tagen Gebetszeiten wo der Herr den Eindruck schenkte dass etwas grosses geschehen wuerde. Dass Menschen befreit wuerden, und Unterdrueckung ein Ende nehmen wird, Menschen wuerden Freiheit erleben und neues Leben wuerde beginnen.

Als wir unsere open-air meetings am Mittwoch starteten kamen schon sehr viele Menschen zusammen und wollten hoeren was gesagt wird. Gleich beim ersten Abend wurde nach vorne gerufen und jeder der Heilung brauchte konnte seine Hand heben und viele wurden beruehrt von Gott. Ohren gingen auf und solche die stumm waren, fingen an zu sprechen. Einige kamen nach vorne und berichteten, wie sie von daemonischen Belastungen befreit wurden, einfach weil sie den Namen Jesus angerufen hatten. Andere kamen zu den Veranstaltungen und konnte keine der gesprochenen Sprachen verstehen, aber waren so beruehrt von der Gegenwart Gottes, dass sie sich aufmachten um nach jemanden zu suchen, der ihnen das Geheimnis dieses neuen Gefuehls erklaeren konnte. Daraufhin gaben sie ihr Leben Jesus und fingen neu an.
In den Tagen geschehen erstaunlich Dinge die vorher noch nie geschehen waren, Menschen konnten nachts nicht mehr schlafen, weil sie von Traeumen heimgesucht wurden, die die Botschaft bestaetigte, die am Nachmittag gepredigt wurde. Und als Resultat kamen sie auf verschiedene Kirchengrundstuecke um mit dem Pastor vor Ort zu sprechen damit sie Frieden finden konnten. Einmal war es eine 8 koepfige Familie, ein ander mal eine 4 koepfige Familie. Und die Berichte die wir hoeren, nachdem wir wieder eine Woche weg sind von dort sagen, dass es weitergeht, Menschen suchen nach Antworten, selbst religioese Fuehrer von Moscheen, machen sicht jetzt auf die Such um herauszufinden was dort wirklich geschah in diesen Tagen, wo das Evangelium so klar und kraftvoll nach Moyale kam. Jesus hat sich verherrlicht und hat gezeigt, dass er allein durch die Kraft seines Wortes und der des Heiligen Geistes, neu machen kann. Er hat wieder einmal gezeigt, dass er Menschen liebt, mehr als alles andere, und er hat einen Weg geschaffen, dass Menschen wieder in Beziehung kommen koennen und neu anfangen koennen.

Hello,
I told some of you that we were going on a trip to northern Kenya to preach the good news of Jesus Christ. The target area was a place right at the border to Ethiopia in a muslim dominated place. The entire land up there is almost like a country on its own, it is disconnected from the developed part of southern Kenya, and it gained an infamous reputation of banditry and intertribal clashes for many years. It is mainly populated by cushitic tribes who are known to be fierce fighters who can't be easily intimitated. The infrastructure in that part of the country is in a dire state of disrepair, the total distance from Nairobi to Moyale is about 1200 km and only 500 are tarmaced, which makes a trip to those hot and arid places a real adventure which only a few daring people from down country Kenya have ever undertaken.
But nevertheless that is the area which was targeted for letting peopel there know that there is a good who loves people more than anything and there is a need for repentance and a chance for reconciliation through Jesus Christ and the blood he offered as a substitute for our sin.
When we reached there we had the strong impression that God would be doing something great and people will be released from the bondages of their sin and the bondage of religion. And indeed as soon as we started explaining who the saviour is, coming from the old Testament, people started responding in a hurry, because they were convicted by the power of the Holy Spirit that they needed to start a new life. God graciously manifested himself and the word through signs and wonders, people got healed from various diseases and sicknesses. Others got freed from demonic oppression and started a new life. others had dreams and nights and were compelled to see a pastor in the area and find out how they could find rest for their souls. Even up to date, that is after one week, men and women and entire families are still looking for help to get some of their questions answered. It was a powerful display of Gods love to the peopel of Moyale and the warlike people of northern Kenya, that there is a way we can get peace in our lives, through the prince of peace.
I may refer to that event in some of my posts in the future, because I believe it was a milestone in my career as a missionary to the peoplegroup God had called me to.

Hallo,
Jetzt wo ich schreibe faellt mir das heutige Datum auf, der 9.11., ich weiss noch wo ich die news vom Sturz der Towers in NewYork gesehen habe. Ich sass damals in Korntal bei Stuttgart bei einem Seminar ueber Fundamentalistischen Islam und die Bilder die damals ueber die Schirme gingen haben sich ja wirklich unausloeschlich eingepraegt. Wir leben hier ja staendig mit dieser Spannung von Gewalt und Unterdrueckung die durch diesen Fundamentalismus ausgeloest werden. Ich bin jeden Freitag in einem Viertel Nairobis unterwegs, wo extremismus gelehrt wird in bestimmten Moscheen. Fuer uns weisse ist da bisher noch nichts gewesen was einem in irgendeiner Form Angst einfloessen muesste. Aber wir schauen immer wieder auf das Nachbarland und sehen welche dinge dort passieren und trauen unseren Augen nicht. Extreme Gewalt greift dort um sich und jeder der es geschafft aus dem Land zu fliehen redet von der Hoelle auf Erden, die sich dort momentan zutraegt.
Heute hatten wir das Privileg uns mit einem religioesen Fuehrer zu treffen. Der kam aber selbst als Patient zu uns. Wir wunderten uns etwas, er war eigentlich kerngesund, klagte aber ueber alle moeglichen Symptome. Der Gedanke kam auf, ob er vielleicht an der Situation seines Landes erkrankt ist. Aehnlich wie Nehemiah im Alten Testament, der nachdem er den Bericht von seinem Heimatland erhalten hatte, regelrecht krank wurde. Wir hoffen dass es noch menschen gibt in diesem Land die wie Nehemiah ueber die Situation ihres Landes Traenen vergiessen koennen und aus Verzweiflung zum Herrn schreien. Moege Menschen aufstehen die sich nicht mit dem Status Quo zufrieden geben sondern in den Riss treten und nicht ruhen zu beten, bis Gnade kommt.

Hello,
It is again the end of a week, I hope yours was good. I am just coming out of the Hospital where I took care of one of our patients from Eastleigh in Nairobi. We, one of our doctors and another friend went there together as we usually do on Fridays and found one of our patients there very sick. We sent her straight to the Hospital where we are and tried to get things done as fast as possible.
Also today we met with one of the most influential leaders of the Som community, the Imam of the country. We really wanted to share with him about what is happening in his country, why all efforts to make peace seem to fail. The problem was, that we couldn't really talk about the issues of his nation since he was also sick. We were wondering what caused the sickness, because all vital signs were quite normal. We were left thinking whether he is stressed out like Nehemiah when he heard and saw the state of his city. He broke out in tears and cried before God and asked for a solution and to build the nation again. I hope and pray that there will be enough people in that land who genuinely can cry because of what is happening in their land and that they would honestly ask God for somebody who can step in the gap.

Hallo,
Zwischen diesem blog und meinem letzten hat sich ein langes Schweigen eingeschlichen. Das lag zum Teil daran dass ich einen kurzen Trip nach Deutschland eingebaut hatte. Meine Eltern hatten ihren 50igsten Hochzeitstag und wollten mit allen ihren Kindern feiern. So hatte ich mich kurzentschlossen ins Flugzeug gesetzt und bin nach Deutschland gereist um bei diesem denkwuerdigen Augenblick dabeizusein. Nicht nur dabei zusein, sondern meinen Eltern auch die noetige Ehre zu erweisen und sie zu segnen und mit meiner Familie zusammen gesegnet zu sein. Es war schoen fuer die paar Tage da zu sein und auch vor allem meine Eltern in guter Gesundheit vorzufinden.
Gleich nachdem ich wieder zurueck in Kenia war, bin ich mit meiner Familie in den Nordosten Kenias gereist, ziemlich nah an die grenze zu Somalia, wo sich ein riesiges Fluechtlingslager befindet. Dieses Lager ist inzwischen das zuhause fuer 300.000 somalische Fluechtlinge. Wir wollten einige unserer Freunde dort besuchen, menschen die wir bei uns im Krankenhaus kennengelernt hatten. Wir wollten aber auch unseren Kindern wieder die Chance geben mit dem was wirklich in Afrika los ist, konfrontiert zu werden. Unsaegliches Elend auf der eine Seite, aber auch einzigartiges Geschick zu ueberleben und aus allem das beste zu machen. Man hat ja so ein gewisses Bild wie ein Lager aussieht, aber wie es wirklich ist macht einen Staunen. Ein Markt voll mit allem was das Herz begehrt und Restaurants wirklich gut, vielleicht nicht schoen nach europaeischem Geschmack, aber gut. Wir assen dort die besten Spaghetti suedlich von Italien.
Nebenbei bemerkt geschieht dort in dem Land aus dem diese Fluechtlinge kommen etwas von dem die Welt nichts mitbekommt. Eine Splittergruppe von Al-Qaida treibt dort ihr Unwesen und hat weite Teile des landes unter Kontrolle. Sie kommen zu einem unruehmlichen Namen durch die willkuerlichen Amputationen von haenden und Fuessen und Koepfungen von Menschen die aussehen als waeren sie keine Moslems nach der Art wie sie es sich vorstellen. Gold- und Silberzaehne werden aus den Muendern gerissen, weil es unislamisch ist, sich so zu verzieren.
Viele Menschen sind sehr, sehr frustriert was dort in diesem Land ablaeuft, und ueber die Unfaehigkeit ihrer Leiter, Frieden zu schaffen.

Hello again,
It's been a while again since I wrote. During Summer I had to rush to Germany for just a few days to be with my parents who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. It was a good time to be with them, encourage them and bless them and also be blessed together with all my familymembers. I thank God for the provision for this short trip. I found my parents and all family members in good health which is a great blessing. I didn't travel around much, I just spent time with them and enjoyed a bit of Summer there.
Soon after I came back to Kenya I took my family to a trip to the northeastern part of this country, in particular to the huge refugee camp which has been established in the semiarid land close to the border to Somalia. That camp is home for about 300.000 mainly Somali refugees who ran away from the ever raging war in Somalia. We visited some of our friends who have come to the Hospital for treatment and we had a great time together. In those places it always causes some commotion when a white person shows up who speaks Somali, and this time even with two white teenagers, that caused even more sensation. But it was still a lot of fun, to top it all we went out for lunch in the biggest restaurant in the camp and had the best Spaghetti south of Italy.
Somalia, by the way is experiencing the worst of times right now, while a splinter group of Al quaida is terrorizing the nation, with random amputations of hand and feet, and not very seldom do they chop of heads of those they think are not the kind of Muslim they appreciate. Many, many people get extremely frustrated with the ongoing fighting and inability of the leaders to sit down together and agree to make peace.

Schon wieder ist eine intensive Woche an uns vorbeigerauscht. In letzter Zeit haben wir ganz stark das Gefuehl dass sich sehr viel tut hier in der S omali welt und bei uns im Krankenhaus. Doerte unterrichtet gerade eine Klasse mit 8 Studenten die unsere Sprache lernen wollen, nein nicht Deutsch. Gestern haben wir dazu eine Frau aus Nairobi eingeladen, die erst seit wenigen Monaten mit ihrem neuen Freund zusammenlebt, den hat sie hier bei uns kennengelernt, und der hat ihr versprochen fuer immer bei ihr zu bleiben. Er heisst Jesus, und seit sie den kennt, hat sie keine Angst mehr. Sie kam mit ihrem Mentor, eine Frau, die den gleichen Freund hat, nur schon ein bisschen laenger. Und zusammen sind sie dann bei dem Bett eines kleinen Babys angehalten und haben fuer sie gebetet. Das haette sie wahrscheinlich alleine nicht getan, aber zusammen hatten sie den Mut das zu tun, und gleichzeitig konnten sie von ihrem neuen Freund erzaehlen. Wir hoffen dass sie regelmaessig kommt und den Unterricht der Sprache uebernimmt.
Eine Fluechtlingsfrau war bei uns die letzten 14 tage im Krankenhaus mit einer tragischen Geschichte. Ihr Mann wurde vor etwa 2 Jahren erschossen in Mgdshu, der kleine Sohn schaute zu und spricht seitdem nicht mehr. Sie floh aus dem land und kam ins Lager in Nordkenia, dort wurde sie ebenfalls bedroht und floh wieder. Einer ihrer Soehne hat Polio deswegen kam sie zu uns. Mehrere male wurde sie mit hysterischen Anfaellen auf dem Boden liegend gefunden. Mit ihr haben wir beide sehr viel Zeit verbracht und haben ihr von dem gleichen Freund erzaehlt, der Lasten abnehmen kann. Nachdem wir nicht nur von ihm erzaehlten, sondern auch noch mit ihm sprachen und ihn baten, ob er nicht einige dieser Lasten abnehmen kann, tat er das auch noch. Der Name der Frau ist 'Freiheit', und sie erlebte innerhalb weniger Tage eine enorme Befreiung und eine offene Tuer nach der anderen. Jetzt wird sie wohl eine bevorzugte Behandlung von UNHCR bekommen, weil ihr Mann aus politischen Gruenden ermordet wurde, und sie damit potentiell gefaehrdet ist. Sie hat ihren neuen Freund richtig lieb gewonnen, und hat sogar den Brief den er fuer sie geschrieben hat, mitgenommen, obwohl das gar nicht ungefaehrlich ist.

Hello again,
Another intense week has passed and we wonder what God is doing here in this place. I think I have shared a couple of weeks ago, that another couple from China has joined us here in the Hospital to reach out to our people, we thank God for that. On the other hand we have more people who are getting into language learning and that is exciting. Just yesterday we had a native speaker with her mentor, who just recently got to know her new friend Jesus as somebody she can trust for ever. She wants to come to our place and become a language teacher, which is great because she is the one who truly knows her language better than all of us. The two went to pray for a little S omali girl who struggles to survive, and had a great time of encouragement for the mom. It is so amazing to see what difference it can make when somebody is not ashamed or scared to share some of the hope and the love we have in this friend whose name is Jesus.
Maybe just one or two things from what I am learning in my studies, which covers the topic leadership and culture. I am thrilled as to how much this course speaks into my life and ministry. I think I mentioned that I am the only white person in my class and all are from different countries in East Africa, majority from Kenya, but it covers quite a bit of the rest of the region. This has some significance for me, because it gives a lot of opportunity to wrestle with the whole issue of cultural experience we have had over the years, including culture shock and culture stress. In one of my posts in the discussion I tried to explain in what kind of cultural setting we are in: When I am in contact with my S om friends, I exclusively use my cultural name and those people wouldn't even know my real name. I would even go to the extend of introducing myself as a Muslim but of course would explain what I mean. Then a second later a Kenyan crosses my path and i switch to Kiswaheli or English, and become a cultural christian again, and use phrases which are common there. Another minute later I cross path with an american, and the greeting pattern is totally different, maybe just a hi, and probably no handshake. In explaining the cultural balances we have to do, I just realized in what a diverse world we live in and what energy it costs sometimes to live in such a world.
It helped me to understand that it is privilege to live crossculturally but it also takes.

Hallo,
Sorry, der letzte post war nur in english. Eigentlich wollte ich noch hinterher schreiben, kam dann aber nicht mehr dazu. Heute wollte ich gerne von den letzten paar Wochen berichten, die ziemlich spannend waren, und uns das Gefuehl gaben, dass gerade vieles passiert in unserem Krankenhaus. Beim letzten deutschen mail schrieb ich, dass einige unserer Aerzte gerade dabei sind Somali zu lernen, und die sind auch immer noch fleissig dabei und versuchen zu praktizieren wo es nur geht. Darueber sind wir sehr froh. Jetzt hat sich aber das chinesische Ehepaar entschlossen zu uns zu kommen, die schon einige Monate in Sprachschule waren. Sie werden wahrscheinlich 3 mal die woche bei uns sein, und mit uns arbeiten und den Rest in Nairobi sein. So kommt etwas verstaerkung dazu, sind wir sehr froh darueber.
Letztes Wochenende war ziemlich aufregend, weil ich zu einer Gedenkfeier eingeladen wurde, wo an die Opfer eines Busungluecks gedacht wurde, wo einige der Opfer bei uns im Krankenhaus lagen und ich dort die Eigentuemer der Schule kennengelernt hatte, die den Schultrip organisierten.
Ich konnte dort vor einer ziemlich grossen Menge Somalis und anderer offen ueber die Hoffnung sprechen, die wir haben und einiges davon sogar in Somali tun, was ziemlich grosse Aufregung ausloeste. Gleich am naechsten Tag war ich und einige aus unserem Team zu einer grossen Hochzeit eingeladen, wo der ehemalige Vizepraesident von Somalia vertreten war, mit einem Teil des gegenwaertigen Parlaments von Somalia. Das war eine ausserordentliche Chance Menschen aus Regierungskreisen kennenzulernen. Das heisst in Somalia nur bedingt etwas, weil es keine funktionierende Regierung gibt. Aber immerhin, waren es Menschen mit sehr grossem Einfluss in diesem Teil der Welt, und wir waren sehr dankbar fuer die Moeglichkeit mehr noch bekannt zu werden, und Vertrauen zu schaffen.
Das war wieder mal ein nur kleiner Ausschnitt aus unserem Erleben hier in Kenya mit unserem Schwerpunkt auf das Horn von Afrika.

Hello,
I finished my course in conflict management and teambuilding well last week and am now back to the ministry in the Hospital. Of course I had to take some homework with me which I completed last Friday. I was very proud of my wife for the way she took care of the ministry during my absence. It was extremely busy for her and she was called all the time to either translate or console patients or make peace between quarelling parties. But I think she also enjoyed it. Last week has been interesting here in the Hospital, because the number of people who are learning Somali is steadily increasing. For two weeks now we have a young family from Hong Kong who have spent about 6 months studying Somali and they are looking into ministry opportunities, and one them is our Hospital. We are very curious to see whether God is going to lead them into our team and ministry. We would be very glad. Another one is a young surgeon with his wife who spend about 2 months studying the same language and are very eager to get more into the ministry of the gospel. He does a lot of operations on somali patients but he also wants to share more with them of the love of Christ. So every time we see one another we drop english and start up a conversation in Somali. That is a lot of fun and it gives us a feeling of a growing impact in this place where we are. It seems the Lord is raising more and more workers for the field which is white for the harvest.

Hallo,
Entweder es gibt nichts neues zu berichten, wenn man so lange nichts hoert, oder es ist zu viel los, und sie schaffen es nicht zu schreiben. Ich glaube eher das zweite entspricht der Tatsache. Es war gar nicht meine Absicht den Blog so lange alleine zu lassen. Im Januar habe ich mit einem Studium begonnen, das zeitaufwendig ist, aber wovon ich, und ich hoffe damit mein ganzes Umfeld sehr profitiert. Das Studium endet mit einem Masters in Spiritual Leadership, und der erste Kurs den ich im Januar/Februar gemacht habe, hat die Grundlagen von geistlicher Leiterschaft abgedeckt. Jetzt bin ich 3 Wochen im Kurs Konflikt Management und Teambuilding und lerne sehr viel, auch durch Reflektion des eigenen Verhaltens in frueheren Konflikten. Ich habe natuerlich sehr viel zu lesen und Arbeiten zu schreiben, bin aber sehr dankbar fuer das gelernte und kann es auch gleich wieder praktisch in meiner Arbeit anwenden. Dadurch dass ich jetzt wieder unterwegs bin fuer diese 3 Wochen, heisst das fuer Doerte, dass sie im Hospital die Hauptlast im ministry traegt, aber auch fuer die Kinder da sein moechte, die jetzt noch eine Woche Ferien haben.
Wir hatten aber die Chance genutzt und sind fuer einige Tage runter an die Kueste und haben dort die Seele ein bisschen baumeln lassen. Das hat uns allen gut getan, wieder als Familie zusammen zukommen und Zeit zu haben fuer Dinge, die man sonst nicht tut.
Das Krankenhaus haelt uns nach wie vor sehr beschaeftigt. Je bekannter wir in der Somaligesellschaft werden, um so mehr kommen die Leute zu uns und suchen uns als Ansprechpartner auf. Unter den vielen die wir kennen, sind immer wieder welche, die mehr als nur medizinische Behandlung suchen, und unser Gebet ist es, dass Gott das tut, was es braucht, um gebrochene Menschen zu heilen und Hoffnung zu geben.

Hello,
I have become very bad in writing and keeping my blog up to date. It is not that nothing is happening in my life, probably too many things are going on, and that is what keeps me from writing. In fact right now I am sitting in the computerlab of my school, that is Pan Africa Christian University, where I am taking courses for a degree in Spiritual Leadership. I have started the programme in January for one 3 weeks course, learning about Leadership Foundations. This course of 3 weeks is teaching us on conflict management and Teambuilding.
From May I'll be having online courses on leadership related issues, but I'll tell more about it, as it comes along. It has been a great learning experience over the last few weeks, involving a lot of selfexamination and reflections. Because I am in school currently, my dear wife is holding the fort down in the hospital and with the kids. The kids are on vacation until next week. We tried to have some family time aswell, that is why we escaped to the coast for a few days, switched off the phones and relaxed a bit.
I don't know how many times I have said, that we see an increasing number of Somali patients in our hospital, and every time it seems it is increasing more, and we don't even know how to get to see the many patients at least once and have some conversation, which goes beyond small talk.
But once in a while we encounter visitors or patients who are looking for more than just medical attention, and we are grateful for the way the Lord is working in peoples lives. Our prayer is that God may reveal himself through whatever it takes, to heal those who are broken.

lange nichts gehoert

die zeit scheint nur dahinzufliegen, und aus meinen Samstagsposts ist die letzten Wochen nicht viel geworden. Ich moechte hier nur einige stichwoerter erwaehnen, so dass Ihr wieder etwas auf dem laufenden seid.
Ich hatte im letzten post erzaehlt dass wir eine blume ins haus bekommen hatten. Sie hat wirklich schoen angefangen zu bluehen, aber sie hat auch gemerkt, dass sie hier nicht auf Dauer bei uns leben kann. So hat sie sich selber dafuer entschieden, weiterzuziehen und sich etwas anzueignen, mit dem sie ihren Lebensunterhalt verdienen kann. Wir konnten ihr einen Kontakt verschaffen, wo sie naehen lernen kann, und in relativ kurzer Zeit auch etwas Geld verdienen kann. Und gleichzeitig kann sie an dem Platz auch weiter ihre Bibel lesen und hat Gemeinschaft mit anderenn Christen. Bevor sie ging, hatten wir ihr noch eine richtig schoene Abschiedsfeier gemacht, mit all den neuen Freunden, die sie hier in der Nachbarschaft gewonnen hat. Sie hat viele Ermutigungen mitbekommen und man hat sie dann zusammen gesegnet und ausgesandt.
Was das Land in dem wir leben angeht, ist die Nahrungsmittelkrise immer noch eines der beherrschenden Themen im Leben der Menschen. Wir Auslaender haben es immer noch ein bisschen einfacher, weil wir auf resourcen zurueckgreifen koennen, die der durchschnittsbuerger dieses Landes einfach nicht hat. Die ohnehin schon knappen Reserven werden einfach immer teurer und selbst Grundnahrungsmittel sind nicht mehr fuer jeden erschwinglich. Das fuehrt zu Spannungen in der Bevoelkerung, wir hoffen und beten, dass das Land weiterhin erhalten bleibt, und Gerechtikeit fuer viele geschaffen wird.

it's been long

Hello,
I don't know what happened, but it seems time has just gone by without me saying what is happening here in our family, ministry and country. We are doing fine here in this country of Kenya, even though struggles are there. There is the ongoing foodcrisis, which affects us also to some extend. There is still food to buy, but for those who have no or very little money, things are really getting tougher every day, because the foodprices have just skyrocketed. Even us foreigners we feel it, but we can still reach some resources others don't have. We are still enjoying some peace here, we feel it is a fragile peace, especially when the basic commodities are getting scarcer and scarcer, the tension is rising. We hope and pray that the Lord may keep his hand upon this land and heal it.
As a family we are doing very well, the kids are busy in school and are really into it. Flower who has been with us for about 2 months has now left us. She was really a great joy and added a lot to our family. But she felt she needed to go in with her life and was in need of learning some trade, like sowing, so that she can earn some money. She never asked for anything, and just never took it for granted that she lived in a white man's home and could just expect anything for free. No, she had to work for everything she needed or wanted and I think in the end she appreciated that. We gave her a very nice farewell party with all the friends she made here in the neighbourhood and blessed her as she went on. But she has learned lots of new things here in the short time she has spend with us. We thank God for her, and pray that she may grow and develop into a mature person, who can be responsible and find the way God wants her to go.
It was quite a lot of work for Dorothy to teach and train her, but I think she really enjoyed teaching her the word of God and other lifeskills.
The other day I took our good old car to the workshop to have the engine overhauled after many weeks and months of pondering about it. I hope the result will be good and satisfying.

Hallo,

Ich moechte Euch heute wieder etwas auf den neuesten Stand bringen. Ich glaube ich hab schon mal von dem Maedchen erzaehlt, die um die Weihnachtszeit zu unserer Familie gestossen ist. Sie heisst Blume. Sie ist wirklich eine interessante kleine Person. Wenn man sich mal vorstellt, ein junges Maedel sitzt in einem fuer christliche Mission verschlossenen Land, hoert sich christliche Radiosendungen an, merkt dass da etwas dran ist und entscheidet sich ihr Land zu verlassen und sich auf den Weg zu machen, um nach diesem Programm zu suchen. Sie muss zwei internationale Grenzen ueberwinden, natuerlich alles ohne legale Papiere, und kommt in eine Stadt, die sehr gross ist, und faengt an nach Christen zu fragen, die ihr weiterhelfen koennen. Das natuerlich alles ohne eine der grossen Sprachen zu koennen. Irgendwie bekommt sie dann unsere Telefonnummer heraus und ruft an. Wenn irgendjemand eine Vision hat und Mut hat, dann dieses Maedchen. Sie will die Bibel lernen, und nicht nur fuer sich selber, sondern fuer die Menschen in ihrem Land, sie will eine Bibellehrerin werden.

Seit sie bei uns ist, nimmt Doerte sich sehr viel Zeit mit ihr zu lernen, zu studieren. Sie lernt in allen Bereichen, u.a. auch English und Kochen und backen. Sie kriegt Einfuehrung in die verschiedensten Kulturen. Und inzwischen ist sie auch nicht mehr schuechtern und die Kinder haben auch Spass mit ihr.

Die andere Story ist die von unserem Sohn, der inzwischen in der Sekundarstufe ist. Vor kurzem hatten wir Besuch aus Amerika und wir standen grad so vor dem Hospital und haben uns gegenseitig vorgestellt. Abdi war auch mit dabei. Und der Leiter der Gruppe fragt, ob denn der Junge in die Schule gehen wolle, er sagt ja. Er fragt dann auch mich, ob wir denn die Funds haben, ich sage dass wir nur 10 Euro haben bis jetzt. Dann guckt er noch einmal den Jungen an, und sagt, dass der Heilige Geist ihm gerade den Auftrag gegeben habe, fuer die ganzen 4 Jahre Sekundarstufe aufzukommen. Wir sind fast umgekippt. Das was wir die ganzen 5 Jahre, die wir diesen Jungen nun erziehen, gesehen haben, wird mit einem Satz bestaetigt und festgemacht.

Das war fuer uns und fuer Abdi eine tolle Bestaetigung.

Hello,
It's been a while again since I wrote. Just wanted to give a little update on what happened to our little flower who is in our house since around christmas time. She is quite an interesting little person. I mean listening to the radio for about 6 months and then getting excited about our Jesus. From there deciding to go to Nairobi crossing 2 international borders without any legal document whatsoever, because at the end of each radioshow there is a P.O.Box number from Nairobi. From there asking around Nairobi (without knowing even a little bit of English or Kiswaheli) where the christians are hiding, because she wants to know the Bible so that she later would be able to teach it to others. And that is how she ended up staying with us, cause someone gave her our phonenumber, since a lot of people know that we have something to do with her people. That girl is eager. That girl wants to know. If anyone has a passion or a vision, then it is this girl. So it has been a lot of fun teaching her, showing her around, giving her experience of all sorts. And of course she is opening up more and more and even our kids are having fun with her now.
Our other boy is now in secondary school, which is quite a story also. We had visitors from America the other day and they met our boy just outside the Hospital. We started talking and introducing ourselves. Somebody asked whether he wants to go to school, he said yes. Then he asked me, whether I had the money for him. I said no, I only had a pledge for 10 Euro. The visitor said, I want to commit myself here and now, to pay for that boys entire secondary education, because he had seen something in him, and the Holy Spirit talked to him to get involved in that boys life. It was quite affirming to hear that from a stranger who had never known that boy, but we had invested in that boys life for 5 years, because we had seen something in him.

Ein gutes neues Jahr

Hallo zusammen,
ich gruesse Euch alle aus einem trockenen und sonnenverbrannten Kenya. Wir
sind alle sehr dankbar fuer den Frieden den wir in den letzten Monaten
geniessen konnten. Die Nahrungsmittelversorgung im Lande ist schwierig
geworden was verschiedene Gruende hat. Einmal liegt es an dem Chaos, das wir
am Anfang letzten Jahres hatten und die letzten beiden Regenzeiten waren
sehr schwach oder haben gar keinen Regen gebracht, vor allem in den
Gebieten, die an und fuer sich sehr produktiv sind.
Die Kinder sind seit dieser Woche wieder zurueck in der Schule und freuen
sich die meiste Zeit an der positiven Atmosphaere die sie dort haben.
Benjamin hatte diese Woche seinen Geburtstag gefeiert und hat viel Spass mit
seinen Freunden gehabt.
Kurz nach Weihnachten haben wir ein Maedchen aus dem Nachbarland
aufgenommen. Sie kommt aus der Naehe der Hauptstadt des Nachbarlandes und
hat sich auf die Suche nach Menschen gemacht, die sie lehren koennen. Weil
sie keine Verwandtschaft hier in unserem Land hat, haben wir sie
aufgenommen. Wie lange sie bleiben wird, wissen wir nicht. Aber sie ist wie
ein Schwamm, der alles aufsaugt, und Doerte nimmt sich sehr viel Zeit mit
ihr und lehrt sie alles was sie nur lehren kann. Es muss alles noch in der
Muttersprache des Maedchens geschehen, weil sie nie eine andere Sprache
gelernt hat. Damit sie einziehen konnte, mussten wir unseren Pflegesohn
ausquartieren, fuer ihn ist es ein bisschen einfacher, als Junge kann er
schon mal leichter bei Freunden schlafen. Er ist auch nicht mehr wirklich
lange bei uns, weil in wenigen Wochen die naechste Phase seiner Ausbildung
anfaengt. Er hat im Dezember seine Grundschule abgeschlossen, die hier 8
Jahre lang geht. Allerdings hat er sie in 4 einhalb Jahren gemacht, von
daher muessen wir sein Ergebnis immer noch positiv werten. Wir hoffen und
beten, dass er mit Entschlossenheit und Konzentration an die Sekundaerstufe
rangeht und sich reinhaengt.
Diese Wochen hatten wir interessante Besuche bei uns im Hospital. Einer kam
aus dem Nachbarland und hat sich auf die Suche nach Menschen gemacht, die
ihn das Buch lehren koennen, das wir so schaetzen. Er hat es vor einiger
zeit kennen und liebengelernt. Er hat dafuer allerdings auch einen Preis
bezahlt. Als er beim lesen des Buches entdeckt wurde, hat man ihm den
Oberschenkel zertruemmert und seither laeuft er auf Kruecken. Er hatte kein
Geld fuer ein Krankenhaus, so dass der Knochen nie gefixt wurde.
Interessanterweise kam er nicht um Medizin zu suchen oder Hilfe fuer sein
Bein, sondern ausschliesslich um Gemeinschaft gleichgesinnter zu finden und
in der Wahrheit des Buches gelehrt zu werden. Beim ersten Treffen hat er nur
noch geheult, dass er jetzt nach langer Suche endlich Menschen gefunden hat,
die ihn verstehen und ihm das geben, wonach sein Herz sich so sehr gesehnt
hat.

Hello,
Another update from a hot and dry country in the new year. We had a good
start of the year and we all praise God for the peace which we enjoy the
last months. In this time of the year the whole country is crying out for
water so that plants can grow and food can be provided for everyone to eat.
The kids have just started school again, it was on Tuesday this week when
they went back to school and they do enjoy school for the most part. This
week it was Benjamins birthday and he had a great time with his friends
playing and having fun.
Just after christmas we got a new daughter in our house. It is a young girl
from a neighbouring country who wanted to learn more about the God we serve
and since she had no where to go we took her in. She is about 19 years old
and does not speak a word of English and Dorothy now teaches her whatever
one can teach in a day. She is very sweet and even our kids like her a lot.
And our fosterson had to give up his room in the attic so that she could
move in, but since he is a boy it is a bit easier for him to sleep at a
friends place. Anyway, for that boy we were very busy looking for a
secondary school so that he can start with the next level of education.
Considering that he condensed 8 years of education in 4 and a half years he
did pretty well. We hope that the new phase in his life will lead him to
greater concentration and he will show effort and determination as he did in
the past.
Some days ago we got interesting visits in our place, people who came from
places where you wouldn't think the Gospel is going out at all. A young man
showed up at the Hospital, he didn't look for medicine or a doctor, the only
thing he was interested in was the fellowship of believers and how to get
teaching of the book we treasure so much. He was looking for it for a while
until he was directed to us in the Hospital, that is where we welcomed him
and are able now to give him what his heart so much desires.
He is quite unfortunate, he has to walk on crutches, since somebody found
him reading the book and crushed his leg as a punishment. That was still in
that country which does not like anything to do with our book and the God we
trust.

Hallo,
wir wuenschen Euch von Herzen ein gesegnetes Weihnachtsfest und einen guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr 2009. Ich habe eben mit Freunden von uns die Weihnachtsgeschichte auf DvD angeschaut. In dieser Verfilmung wird die ganze Geschichte aus den Augen Marias betrachtet. Dort kommt so der ganze Druck zum Ausdruck, der auf Maria gelastet haben muss, als sie plötzlich als werdende Mutter erkannt wird, aber noch keinen Mann hat. Und dann dieser unglaubliche Ausspruch, dass sie nun das Kind des höchsten Gottes in sich trägt. Das klingt so unfassbar und ist doch so wahr. So einmalig und hat keinesgleichen. Wie sollte ihr denn jemals jemand glauben und sie nicht die ganze Schuld treffen? Diese Weihnachtsgeschichte ist so voll von Wundern und Geschichten, die nicht in unseren Kopf gehen. Engelserscheinungen waren absolut notwendig um in den Verlauf der Dinge einzugreifen. Und doch hat Gott genau diesen Weg gewählt um in diese Welt zu kommen und den Fürst des Friedens zu bringen. Wenn Ihr schon laenger nicht mehr diese Geschichte gelesen habt und Euch von ihrer Faszination habt anstecken lassen, dann lest sie wieder und lasst Euch von Ihr anstecken.
Gestern abend waren wir mit unseren Kollegen, schwarz und weiss im Krankenhaus, nachdem es dunkel war, und haben zusammen Weihnachtslieder gesungen, kurze Andachten gegeben in den verschiedenen Stationen und mit den Patienten gebetet, die während der Weihnachtstage in Krankenhaus sein müssen. Das war eine sehr schöne Gelegenheit etwas von der Weihnachtsfreude weiterzugeben und zu teilen.
Und später am Abend haben wir es dann so gemacht, wie es unserer deutschen Tradition entspricht, nämlich die Weihnachtsgeschenke unter dem Weihnachtsbaum aufgemacht.

With this blog I want to wish you all a merry christmas and a happy new year. May the blessings of the most high God be with you and may his peace surround you every day. His peace is real and it makes all the difference in our lives. I am just from our friends house where he have watched the nativity story where you see the christmas story through Marys eyes. It is so unbelievable and unconceivable that God chose Mary to bear his son so that he can dwell among us. The amount of shame and disbelief Mary had to suffer for the sake of being the vessel God had chosen. No wonder it is so hard to believe for many even today. But that is what God wanted to do, that is his plan of salvation. He chose to become a baby so that he can be just like us and know where we are hurting and where our difficulties are. The story of Christmas is full of wonders, full of miracles. If you have time, and you should find time, go through it again and discover some of those miracles and see how they can affect your life today.
Last night, christmas eve, many of us, foreigners and Kenyans went charoling in the hospital. A nice opportunity to share a little bit of the christmas joy with those who have to be in the Hospital during this season. I think all of them were very happy to hear the songs and have a word of hope shared with them. With many we were able to pray at their bedsides and give an encouragement to them.
Later in the evening as it is our custom in Germany, we exchanged the gifts, not exactly under a firtree but the next closest to that.
At the end of this blog I remember that almost exactly one year ago I wrote my first blog here under this address.

trip in den Norden

Hallo,
Ich bin ein bisschen in Verzug geraten mit dem schreiben. Letzten Samstag
waren wir im hohen Norden Kenias zu einer Hochzeit von einem guten Freund
von uns. Wir fuhren am letzten Mittwoch los und haben einige stops gemacht,
einmal in einem camelcamp und die zweite Nacht in einem Nationalpark wo wir
an einem Fluss gecampt hatten. Wir sind durch wunderschoene einsame
Landschaften gefahren. Dort wo es sonst eher trocken und nach Wueste
aussieht, war es diesmal gruen und satt. Ueberall auf der Strasse waren die
Spuren von Elefanten zu sehen, die sich an der reichen Weide gütlich taten.
Freitag kamen wir dann in Marsabit an, der Ort, wo die Hochzeit stattfand.
Es war besonders schoen für uns, diese Feier mitzumachen, da dieser junge
Mann fast ein Jahr lang mit uns im Hospital gearbeitet hat und dort eine
Liebe fuer die Somalis bekommen hat, das ist insofern ungewöhnlich, da
seine Volkgruppe und Somalis seit Jahrhunderten erbitterte Feinde sind. Er
kommt aus dem Boranastamm, die unmittelbar an unser Zielvolk angrenzen. Sie
sind kulturell und sprachlich sehr eng verwandt und sehen sich auch sehr
aehnlich. Das frische Ehepaar zieht in Kuerze in eine Somalistadt noch
innerhalb Kenias, nach Garissa, um dort ihren Dienst dann zusammen
weiterzumachen. Sie werden hauptsaechlich in einem der grossen
Flüchtlingscamps an der somalischen Grenze arbeiten. Bei unserer Reise hat
uns Abdi begleitet, und er durfte sich als Boranajuengling verkleiden, und
auf dem Bild seht ihr ihn in der traditionellen Tracht.
Auf dem Rueckweg sind wir dann noch in Isiolo angehalten, das ist etwa auf
der halben Strecke nach Nairobi und haben noch einige unserer Leute besucht,
die wir damals aus Wajir rausgeholt haben, nachdem die Situation fuer
Christen sich immer mehr verschlechtert hatte. Obwohl auch in dieser Stadt
eine muslimische Mehrheit vorherrscht, ist das Leben doch viel angenehmer
fuer Christen, die aus islamischen Hintergrund kommen. Dort ist eine sehr
bunte Mischung an verschiedensten Staemmen, und jeder scheint sich um seine
eigenen Angelegenheiten zu kuemmern.
Im Krankenhaus geht alles immer noch seinen gewohnten Gang, obwohl wir uns
inzwischen kurz vor Weihnachten befinden. Krankheit fragt nicht nach
Feiertagen und so geht es weiter mit vielen Anfragen nach Behandlungen, die
selbst in Europa oder Amerika gar nicht moeglich waeren. Mogadishu ist nach
wie vor ein konstanter Zulieferer von Patienten, und man sieht dort Dinge,
die man sich nicht vorstellen kann, vielleicht schicke ich Euch das naechste
mal ein Bild von einem Krebspatienten, der seit 6 Jahren einen unbehandelten
Hautkrebs im Gesicht hat. Wir haben hier schon vieles gesehen, aber noch nie
einen derart entstellten Menschen. Er kam den ganzen weiten Weg aus
Mogadishu bei uns an, nur um einige Tage spaeter gesagt zu bekommen, dass
nichts auf der ganzen Welt nach menschlichen Ermessen fuer ihn getan werden
kann. Und so fuhr er wieder zurueck in sein Land, nur mit der Hoffnung, die
wir ihm gegeben haben, dass Gott heilen kann, und alle Dinge fuer ihn
moeglich sind.

Hello,
What has happened this week? On Sunday Abdi came back from school and he was so happy that he has finally finished his primary education. How well he did, we don't know yet, cause the results come out towards the end of December. But we hope he managed to get good grades so that he can join a good secondary school. This week if all goes well I'd like to take him to a school with a very good reputation and see whether he can make it. It really would be a miracle cause the applications should have gotten there by August this year. But we want to try anyway. Even for Hanna-Joy and J-Benjamin next week vacation starts, a few more exams and they are done for this year. Always at the end of the term they are exhausted and ready for a break.
I don't know about you, but we followed the Piracy events in the Indian Ocean with a lot of curiosity, almost admired the guts of those guys who don't seem to fear anyone, not superpowers nor their sophisticated weapons. But they go and get what they want even if it is the biggest ship ever hijacked. On the other hand we see the desperation in the people who have been without a government for 18 years, living in total anarchy. Probably that is what leads them to do such daring acts because they have nothing to loose, they can only win.
Then on the other hand we got lots of patients from these camps whose bills are paid by the big organisations. Normally they are seen in the camps by our surgeons, and when they come and they are about to do the surgery some of them would say no to the surgery because that is not exactly what they want. That brings a lot of frustration to the doctors and staff, cause you know a lot of money has been spent and here comes somebody and says, no I don't need that I do it the way I want.
Well, that is only one part of what we are doing, there are also many good and understanding moms who accept whatever has been said. In fact one of our paediatricians told me that he was very impressed with the common sense especially of the Somalimoms, they normally know what is wrong, and in many cases if they raise a complaint it is good to look into it. They usually have a valid point.

Hier sitze ich wieder am Schreibtisch an einem wunderschoenen Samstagnachmittag, draussen ist herrliches Sommerwetter, und es ist sogar schoen gruen, denn es hat gut geregnet die letzten Naechte und der Boden ist schoen satt mit frischem Wasser. Oben an der Schule ging es hoch her, denn die 7. und die 8. Klasse hatte Basketball und Fussballturnier. Das sind die Tage wo die Schulen aus der weiteren Umgebung von Nairobi zusammenkommen um ihre Kraefte zu messen, Hanna-Joy und Joas Benjamin gaben ihr bestes und haben klasse gespielt.
Im Krankenhaus ging wieder eine sehr interesante Woche zu Ende mit einem nicht abreissenden Strom von Somalis aus allen Ecken Nairobis und allen Ecken eines in sich voellig zerstoerten Landes Somalia. Diese Woche hatten wir wieder sehr viel mit Menschen zu tun, die entweder Schilddruesenkrebs oder Krebs der Speiseröhre hatten, d.h. sie koenne nicht sprechen weil sie diesen Luftroehrenschnitt haben, mit einer Röhre drin. (Ich hab leider den medizinischen Begriff im deutschen vergessen.) Dann haben wir diese Mengen an Somalis aus den verschiedenen Camps von denen ich hin und wieder schon geschrieben habe. Manche von ihnen kamen in dieser Woche und die Aerzte sagten dass da medizinisch alles in Ordnung ist, aber die traumata sind so tief, d.h. die seelischen Wunden die die Menschen durch die Jahre des Buergerkriegs erlebt haben sind so abartig, dass viele abschalten und abdrehen. Viele psychische Schaeden sind dadurch entstanden, die bis jetzt sicher noch kein Mensch erfassen kann. Andererseits machen wir Kontakte zu Leitern von Clans, die uns bitten zu kommen und nur darauf warten bis eine zeit der Stabilitaet in Somalia kommt, um dann loszugehen und neues in diesem Land zu schaffen.
Es gibt diesen enormen Stolz, von dem ich immer wieder schreibe, aber es gibt auch die absolute Verzweiflung und die, die zu einem Tiefpunkt in ihrem Leben angekommen sind, und nur darauf warten, bis ihnen jemand sagt, dass es einen gibt, der sie wirklich liebt und Hoffnung und Zukunft fuer sie hat, auch wenn jegliche Hoffnung und Zukunft in dieser Welt zerbrochen zu sein scheint. Der arabische Name fuer diesen Mann heisst, Al-masih.

Hi,
After just a few hours in the morning in the Hospital I have a chance to sit at the computer and do a bit of updating. At this time we have quite a number of very sick people with cancer and all sorts of terrible diseases. And one just passed away this morning, so I had to talk to the relatives and once more I was amazed how easy some of these people take the news of somebody has gone. I talked to a Kenyan doctor who just couldn't believe how emotionless some of the people take sad news and accept it as the will of God almighty.
This week I didn't spend much time in the Hospital because of some visitors from Switzerland who wanted to get to know what God is doing in Kenya and beyond. We went to the biggest slumarea in the whole continent of Africa, Kibera where we got to learn of some projects which are intended to bring hope and a future to many young people. It is a sad picture to walk through a place where life is not worth much and opportunities are rare. And still life continues and everyone is trying to make a living and push on with life whatever means one may use, honest or less honest.
But we also went to my village within Nairobi, that is the Somalisection of the city which probably has about 150.000 refugees from the neighbouring country. First of all it had rained over the night and cause there is no drainage system the roads were full of water, some places kneedeep. Especially for small cars you can really get stuck and get your car and the engine filled with water. Anyhow, we made it through and had a great time enjoying the hustle and bustle of this part of town which apparently is the biggest market in East Africa. I wish many of you could come over and have a trip and get some Ethiopian food and coffee and enjoy the diverse culture of that place.

Eine Woche ist wieder an uns vorbeigerast, und es ist gut an einem Samstagabend kurz anzuhalten. Die Kinder sind noch an der Schule und geniessen die Aktivitaeten die neben der normalen Schulzeit laufen. Joas Benjamin hatte eine Spaghettiparty und Hanna-Joy auch funsachen mit ihrer Klasse. Heute nachmittag hatten wir eine Party fuer einen unserer Freunde aus dem Norden Kenias abgehalten, der in wenigen Wochen heiraten will, dafuer aber noch Geld braucht. Die Party war eine Art fundraiser fuer die Hochzeit im Dezember, zu der wir auch hinfahren wollen.

Ein Hoehepunkt in dieser Woche war sicher der Trip in den Nordosten Kenias, wieder einmal nahe an die so malische Grenze. Ich war da ja seit unserem Abschied aus Wajir nicht mehr. Dieser Trip war ein joined venture zwischen mehreren ganz verschiedenen Organisationen, die sich um die Versorgung eines kleinen Ortes mitten im Busch kuemmerten. Eine Besonderheit dieses Ortes ist die unmittelbare Naehe zu einem riesigen Fluechtlingslager, das von der UN und anderen grossen Organisationen versorgt wird. Die Versorgung gilt allerdings nur den Fluechtlingen und nicht den Orten drum herum, das wiederum loest oft starke Spannungen aus. Um diese Spannungen etwas zu entschaerfen haben sich die erwaehnte Gruppe das Ziel gesetzt bei den "Gastgebern" anzusetzen und dort unter die Arme zu greifen. Neben der offiziellen Einweihung eines Tiefbrunnens wurde eine mobile Klinik abgehalten, d.h. in einem der wenigen Steingebaeuden (eine Schule) die es dort gibt wurde ein Klassenzimmer in eine Klinik verwandelt. D.h. vier Aerzte mit jeweils einem Übersetzer sehen Patienten wie am Fliessband. Fast alle hatten Parasiten und Infektionen in der Blase, was durch das schlechte unreine Wasser ausgeloest wurde. Am Ende des Tages sahen wir um die 400 Patienten und nebenbei lief noch die Einweihung der Quelle fuer das reine Wasser. Die Leute waren sehr, sehr dankbar und wir hatten eine weit offene Tuer.

Es waere schoen dort bald wieder zurueckzukommen und auch mal einige Tage dort zu sein, und vor allem die Naechte um das Lagerfeuer zu geniessen, und mit den Menschen dort wirklich ins Gespraech zu kommen.

Wie sehr wuenschen wir den Menschen das echte lebendige Wasser, von dem jeder der es trinkt nicht wieder duerstet.

Hallo,
just another brief update on the things which are going here in this
country. Some weeks ago another churchgroup approached us here at the
Hospital to see whether we can free some docs to go on a medical trip to
some place in North eastern Kenya. I told some individual doctors to find
out the interest. There are some who are really excited about going to
places which are far from the comfortzone of Nairobi or our little Hospital
setup. The place where we are going is not considered to be Kenya at all,
even though it is within the borders of the country. It is hot, it is
miserabel, it is poor. In the immediate neighbourhood we have roughly
200.000 Refugees mainly from that wartorn country I am always writing about.
This time the target group is not the refugees but the hostcommunity. The
big UN bodies tend to help the refugees and kind of forget the outlying
communities, and tensions arise from there. The goal is now to pay attention
to the needs of those around cause their needs are almost as great as the
ones of the refugees. The trip starts tomorrow and we'll be back, if all
goes well, on Wednesday. I've been to the camp only once and it is quite
pathetic, you see individuals who have lived in the camp as long as the war
in Somalia is going on. Kids were born there, and are now adults, and
haven't seen anything else but life as a runaway and somebody who depends on
the mercy of some foreign charitable organisation.
We are praying that we may be able to make a difference in the lives of some
people while we are there.
Otherwise work and ministry in the Hospital continues with its ups and
downs. We had an interesting day yesterday which doesn't happen too many
times. First we went to visit a young girl from that same refugee camp who
needed to have a leg amputated because of cancer in the bone. I think if she
could have jumped, she probably would have jumped at me. Full of anger at
anything and anyone she wanted me only out of her room and be left in peace.
I had to respect her and left her alone.
Then we went to the next one, who had a terrible mouthcancer, and no tongue
left ot talk with. He desperately was trying to communicate but noone
understands him. So he started kicking and showing all his frustration to
anyone within his reach. I later learned that he used all his money on some
drugs which evidently cause cancer. That gave me a good chance to talk to
the relatives about the rewards of sin. At the end you reap what you sow.
That is a lesson we all need to learn. Let us sow good seeds in our lives so
that we may reap the good harvest in this life and in the life to come.

neues aus Kenya

Hallo,

Mein erster blog in deutsch mehr als zwei Wochen nachdem ich wieder in Kenya bin. Ich sitze gerade in unserem Wohnzimmer, Hanna-Joy übt ihre Klarinette, Dörte richtet das Abendessen und Joas Benjamin hilft dabei. Vor ungefähr einer Stunde kam ich mit Dörte aus Nairobi zurück. Sie ist heute nachmittag von einem Vorbereitungstreffen fuer eine Konferenz aus Addis Abeba zurueckgekommen. Ich war hier mit unserem Pflegesohn, Abdi um zu sehen wie es bei ihm weitergeht. Er war am Samstag von der Schule geflogen, mit verschiedenen Anschuldigungen. Das Hauptproblem schien sein Temperament gewesen zu sein, das er nur schwer kontrollieren kann. Nach einer strengen Unterredung mit einem meiner Somalibrueder und einem Anruf an der Schule, durfte er heute wieder los und wird auch sein Examen schreiben duerfen, das in wenigen Wochen beginnt.

Seit diesem Sommer ist bei uns im Krankenhaus ein Arzt aus USA, der fliessend arabisch spricht und jetzt im Begriff ist, Somali zu lernen. Mit ihm bin ich die letzten Tage unterwegs gewesen um Gespräche mit Muslimen zu suchen, Gebet anzubieten oder einfach zu helfen, wo Hilfe nötig ist.

Er ist im weissen Kittel und hat damit den Doktor Status, obwohl er noch gar nicht offiziell im Krankenhaus arbeitet, sondern eigentlich noch Sprachschueler ist, und zusammen hatten wir eine klasse Zeit. Eine junge Somalifrau die jahrelang an der Hauptmoschee in Mekka gearbeitet und gelernt hat war da und hat uns in Gespräche verwickelt, die sehr interessant waren und sich um die zentralen Themen des Glaubens handelten. Letzendlich geht es immer wieder darum, die Wahrheiten des Evangeliums der Lehre des Islam gegenüberzustellen. Das geschieht auf sehr unterschiedliche Weise. Ein älterer Mann wurde bei uns eingeliefert, kam direkt aus Mogadischu, und als er von seiner Heimatstadt erzaehlte, kamen ihm die Tränen, weil sein Land und Heimat keinen Frieden finden, und es nach menschlichen Ermessen auch in naher Zukunft keine Aussicht auf Frieden gibt. Wir konnten ihm nur sagen, dass es einen gibt, dessen Name Friedefürst heisst. Und der muss bekannt werden in diesem Land.

Back to Kenya

I can't believe it is already two weeks since I am back to Kenya. In fact two Saturdays ago I was sitting in the airplane on my way back to our country where we serve and where we know the Lord has some more work for us to do. My dear wife and my two kids came and picked me from the airport, it was great to see them again and to be united after this long and extended home assignment. I was ready to get back to the ministry and be with the Somali people again, and it didn't take more than two or three days until life came back to normal and the routine of going down to the Hospital, or take the kids up to the school in the mornings, hear their exciting stories they share. Or again share the Hospitalstories at the Dinner table, which the family usually doesn't enjoy, cause they aren't normally very nice stories. Like so many again with gunshotwounds in all possible places of the body. That is just another indication that the situation in Somalia continues to worsen. Things are totally out of control and shooting a fellow brother or whoever is no big deal any more. The sense of justice or righteousness seems to have gone down the drain completely. But as dramatic as the developments may be in the country, also diseases strike, such as cancer. Just a few minutes ago I came back from the Hospital where I had to comfort two Somaliladies who just lost their mother after suffering from cancer for quite a while.
First thing tomorrow morning is to go down the Hospital again and talk to a patient who suffered mouth cancer. Our docs have removed the complete lower jaw and put a metal one inside instead. Sometimes I really marvel at these guys and thank God for good docs, who also love God and can share about him. Their white coats truly gives them an authority to talk about a God who loves people more than anything. I enjoy working together with them and do the work together on both spiritual and physical levels.

It seems I am getting back to the routine of writing my saturday posts. Last time I told you that I was on my way to Holland. And indeed I went after I got in touch with a church in Tilburg. Somebody from my homechurch here in Velbert told me about friends in the one town in Holland which seems to have the highest population of Somalis in continental Europe. That of course was my goal to meet up with our people who have chosen to start a new life here in Europe, after their state has failed in such a dramatic way. And indeed I met a big number of them in Tilburg Noord, there must be thousands of them living closely together. The interaction was similar to what I see in Africa, it is so easy to get in contact with people once you speak their language. One calls his friend to come over and see this white guy who speaks our language and obviously knows a lot about their culture. In fact, I went to the park where the young and middleaged Somalis get together to chew that staff we call Khat or Chat. And we had a very nice time together. The sad thing about it all is, that most people there only wait for that Chat to come and that is the work for the day. It seemed to me as if people there really have no hope of a better future, there is no way of going back home, cause home is totally devastated and there is no sign of peace yet. Everyone was very friendly and I even got an invitation in a home where we had the chance to break the fast together, since we are in the month of Ramadan.
There again I appreciated the beautiful opportunities we have in Kenya to work towards peace in Somalia through medicine and through the introduction of the true maker of peace.

Hi there,
I am still here in Germany, while my family is back in Kenya since September first. School started already on the 2nd, so they really didn't have a lot of time to adjust to Africa. But from what I am hearing they are doing good. Dorothy is back to the routine in the Hospital, that is the report I am getting. There has been a big change over the summer, a lot of people have left the station and new ones have joined us. New teachers for the kids, new doctors in the Hospital, but still a lot of excitement about the ministry. Dorothy told me about a doc from an arab speaking country who is very ready to join us in the ministry we are doing.
I think for all of us (family) our homeassignment was positive, being at home for a while, seeing different things, see the beauty of an medieval town, and just enjoying the culture which is very familiar to us parents, but for the children still in many aspects it's very new.
For myself I have to hang in there a little longer until Africa has me again. I'm gonna rush to Holland tomorrow morning, since I am close to the border anyway it is not a big deal. I want to look out for our people, see what they are doing, and whether there is some ministry going on.
And next week I'll attend a conference for pastors, which is our annual conference from our denomination. When that is all done, I will be free to go back to kenya and join the rest of the family.
My updates haven't been very frequent while here in Germany, that is partly because I haven't had access to the Internet the way I wanted it, and partly because we were quite busy running up and down.

Hi,
Just want to say a quick hello to those who are following the events on our homeassignment. An assignment it really is. Not a vacation as some may think it is. Dorothy is still busy down there on the other side of the globe in the Hospital. The kids are winding up their schoolwork. Myself I am busy visiting churches and friends in many different parts of the country and in particular in our State, Nordrhein-Westfalen. Especially in my homechurch I was blessed to be able to visit almost all our housegroups, I mean literally every evening I have been in a different group. That gave me beautiful opportunities to share about our ministry, about Gods work, challenges and successes in different areas of ministry. It is another beautiful thing to reconnect with friends and catch up on things of life. For some a couple of years have changed their lives totally, things which were important aren't important anymore, only because God had a chance to speak into their lives and changed it.
It is lovely also to see, that with some of our friends time doesn't matter, even if you haven't talked for a whole year, you still continue right where you stopped, and it feels as if no time had passed.
Keep on reading our posts, a time will come when they get a little more exciting again, latest when we are back on African soil. Have a lovely day, Thomas

Hallo,
ich will mich heute wieder kurz melden und berichten wie bisher der Heimataufenthalt laeuft. Die eine Woche in Erzhausen verlief super und Doerte hatte ich am Samstag zum Flughafen gefahren und sie kam dann auch planmaessig in Nairobi an und hat die Kinder am naechsten Tag froehlich angetroffen. Fuer mich ging es von dort aus nach Thueringen wo eine kleine Gemeinde einen dynamischen Dienst tut. Dort hatte ich zwei Naechte mit ganz lieben Leuten verbracht und zusammen hatten wir richtig schoene Gemeinschaft. Dann ging es weiter Richtung Sueden in meine alte Heimat in Bayern wo ich Zeit hatte Verwandtschaft und Freunde zu besuchen. Letzten Samstag machte ich mich auf den Weg in die Schwaebisch Haller Gegend um dort eine Gemeinde zu besuchen, wo liebe Freunde von uns im Pastorendienst stehen. Samstag und Sonntag hatte ich dort Gelegenheit zu dienen und von unserem Dienst in Kenia und der Arbeit mit Somalis im Krankenhaus zu berichten. Seit gestern abend bin ich nun in Velbert und wohne bei Freunden aus unserer Gemeinde. Es tut ganz gut wieder die Verbindung mit der Gemeinde zu pflegen und auch die Verbindung mit Freunden und der Verwandtschaft zu pflegen.
So viel erst mal fuer heute aus Velbert, mal schauen was die deutsche Mannschaft am Mittwoch macht, Thomas

hello from Germany,

It has been quite a time here in Germany so far. We started our Safari first in Frankfurt, travelled down to Stuttgart area, travelled back to the Frankfurt area where we had our seminar in a Bibleschool. After I dropped Dorothy at the Airport to go back to Kenya I continued my Safari to the eastern part of this country, a small town called Eisenach in Thueringen. I had a wonderful time with a lovely little church there. Wonderfully committed Christians, it was a real blessing to be there and fellowship with the body of Christ. From Eisenach I continued my journey down south to Bavaria, where my parents live. I had a real good time there visiting with family and friends. It was quite busy with 3-4 visits a day in different places, but it was definitely worthwhile. Last Saturday my journey took me to a place called Gaildorf, near Schwaebish Hall where I spoke in two services, Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

Our dear friends where I spent the night sent me off on Sunday afternoon so that I could reach Velbert in a good time. So last night I arrived in Velbert. Good friends of ours opened their house for me which allows me to be in the church and in the cell groups all over the town.

For the next two weeks I will be in this part of Germany and reconnect with our home church and our mission home office. It is a time of sharing of hearts and I thank God for the provision so far in so many ways. One is the provision of a good car, which I really enjoy.

By the way, Dorothy has reached safely and is with the kids now, and all of them are doing very well only that we miss one another. Just a couple of weeks from now, and we will be together again.

hello,
this is my first post from Germany, we just arrived a couple of days ago, on
Sunday, after a very uneventful trip all the way from Kijabe to europe. The
big event was, when I was trying to start my car up at Kijabe, when all was
packed and ready to go, nothing moved, because the starter motor decided to
quit. So I had to call a friend of mine and ask him to help me out and take
us all to Nbi.
It worked out well, the guy took us and later on we were dropped at the
airport so that we could catch our plane. All went well we got all our
luggage there in Frankfurt, and a good friend of ours picked us from the
airport and took us to his home where we got the first orientation for our
time here in Germany. It is quite exciting again to be in a country where
the streets do not have potholes and the internet moves ten times quicker
than the one we are used to.
I'll let you know what is happening here in this country as we continue with
our homeassignment here. Maybe we can meet at one point,

Hallo,
vergangenen Samstag entschieden wir uns kurzfristig zu Abdis Schule zu
fahren. Die liegt etwa 300 km nordöstlich von uns an den Haengen von Mt.
Kenya. Es war Besuchstag und wenn da kein Besuch kommt, werden die Kinder
immer ganz depressiv. Unsere Kinder hatten noch einen Ferientag und so
machten wir uns auf den Weg in einen ganz schoenen Teil Kenias, ueppiges
gruen ueberall und exotische Fruechte jeder Art sind dort zu finden. Abdi
hat sich total gefreut, dass wir kamen und wir konnten ihn noch einmal
kraeftig ermutigen, denn in den naechsten Ferien, werden wir dann nicht da
sein. Und noch dazu steht er kurz vor seinen letzten Pruefungen, bevor er in
die naechste Stufe seiner Schulausbildung eintritt. Wir verbrachten die
Nacht in einem Motel und sind dann am naechsten Morgen noch auf eine
Wanderung, wo ihr Hanna-Joy mitten in den Kaffefeldern seht.
Letzte Woche hatten wir eine Gebetskonferenz, die von World Vision
organisiert wurde. Ein Gebetsteam aus Nigeria war mit uns und der Focus lag
auf Gebet fuer Somalia. Bemerkenswert war die eindeutige Dominanz von
Afrikanern aus vielen Laendern Afrikas, und nur wenige von uns
Bleichgesichtern. Es ist ein neues Bewusstsein entstanden, dass Veraenderung
nur durch Gebet stattfinden kann. Denn nach 18 Jahren Krieg und zahllosen
Friedensverhandlungen, die alle gescheitert sind, wurden wir alle neu
motiviert, das Angesicht Gottes zu suchen und vom Herrn des Friedens
Veraenderung zu erwarten. Unterstrichen wurde die Botschaft durch Berichte
aus Uganda, das viele Jahre lang von LRA, einer extrem brutalen Organisation
im Norden terrorisiert wurde. Bis eines Tages Pastoren und christliche
Leiter zum Praesidenten gingen und sagten, dass diese kein konventioneller
Krieg ist, der mit konventionellen Waffen gewonnen werden kann. Sondern hier
handelte es sich um einen geistlichen Kampf, der mit geistlichen Waffen
gekaempft werden muesse.
Der Praesident liess sich darauf ein und flog diese Patoren in die
Krisengebiete und unter Gebet und Anrufung des Namens Jesu, wurden die
Opferstaetten und Altaere zerstoert. Unmittelbar darauf fing die Macht des
Leiters, Joseph Kony an zu schwinden und die Rebellen wurden aus dem Land
vertrieben und Friede kehrte wieder zurueck. Jetzt kann man ohne bewaffnete
Begleitung in allen Teilen Ugandas reisen. Viele Laender Afrikas, Somalia
eingeschlossen, werden in Zukunft noch viel gezielter mit Gebet umgeben
werden.
In Kuerze werden wir uns nach Deutschland aufmachen. Wir fliegen Samstag
nacht und werden dann Sonntag frueh in Frankfurt sein. Schon nach einer
woche fliegt Doerte dann ja wieder zurueck und wird mit den Kindern sein,
bis deren Ferien beginnen.

Hi,
I missed the Saturday posting, cause we decided to visit our son in the Mount Kenya region. He is in a boarding school there, and whenever there is a visiting day, it is very important to go and spend some quality time together. But he is doing very well and getting ready for his Standard eight exam. We hope his grades will be good so that he can join a secondary school and continue his studies. By the way the region up there at Mt. Kenya is very beautiful and extremely fertile. It is full of exotic fruits and its unique aroma. We spent one night in a lodge and went for a hike in this beautiful surrounding.
A few days earlier we had a prayerconference somewhere in Nairobi in order to intensify our prayerefforts toward Somalia. The host was a prayerteam from Nigeria, sponsered by Worldvision. The interesting thing was that it was almost all black, from different nations in Africa, and only a few of us whites. It was a great time to pray together and seek Gods face for that nation which is in turmoil for so many years. So far all peace negotiations have failed and we believe that the answer to get lasting peace is in prayer. We had a report on Uganda where the LRA movement was fighting the south with extreme brutality and no weapons were able to defeat those demonic powers. Until pastors and christian leaders got together and went to the president and told him that the answer lies in prayer and the powers of evil can only be destroyed in the name of Jesus. So the army took pastors in those regions and they destroyed altars of worship and declared the name of Jesus in those lands and the result was the defeat of Joseph Kony, their leader. Now there is peace in Uganda, whereby one can travel in all corners of the land without fear and don't need armed escort.
Otherwise, Dorothy and I are leaving Kenya at the end of this week to go to Germany for one week. Dorothy will be with me for just one week and then go back, and I will continue with the homeassignment for a few more months.

Hallo,

es ist Sonntag morgen und draussen ist es wunderschoen, es ist noch relativ warm obwohl die kalte Jahreszeit im Anmarsch ist. Wollte kurz berichten von dem was letzte Woche geschehen ist. Im letzten blog hatte ich von dem trip in das Fluechtlingslager berichtet. Inzwischen sind schon etliche der Patienten bei uns angekommen, die dort gesehen wurden. Es ist immer total interessant zu sehen, wie eingeschuechtert und aengstlich die Leute bei uns sind, wenn sie ganz neu sind. Dann nach 3-4 Tagen sieht man sie dann zum ersten mal laecheln, nachdem sie gemerkt haben, dass wir es gut mit ihnen meinen und keine boesen Absichten haben. Man muss sich das mal vorstellen, sie kommen aus einem Land wo kein English und kein Kiswaheli gesprochen wird, d.h. man ist wie taubstumm, man moechte verstehen und kommunizieren, kann es aber nicht. Die Aerzte und Krankenschwestern sind ebenfalls frustriert und kommen sehr schnell an ihre Grenzen wenn es um die Krankengeschichte geht. Da ist es immer wieder sehr schoen, wenn ich oder Doerte dazwischen kommen kann und eine Bruecke des Verstehens bauen kann. Das sind dann oft die Momente wo das erste Laecheln auftaucht, vielleicht noch etwas versteckt, aber man hat sich schon mal verstanden.

Keiner dieser Menschen hat das Leben im Fluechtlingslager gewaehlt, viele sind schon seit 17 oder 18 Jahren in diesen Lagern, so lang der Krieg in Somalia vor sich hin wuetet. Fast alle von ihnen sind auf die Gnade der UN oder anderen grossen Organisationen angewiesen. Jedenfalls beten wir weiter dass sich die Dinge fuer viele von ihnen grundlegend aendert und sich die Lage normalisiert in Laendern wie Somalia oder Sudan.

A quick hello from the other side of the world. Some of those I mentioned last week actually came from the Refugee camp in order to get some of their healthproblems fixed. It is so interesting to see the brandnew arrivals, how timid and nervous they are when they come into a foreign place like our hospital. And it is even more exciting to see their first smiles after two or three days, after they have realized that all of us mean well with them and are here to do good to them. If you just imagine for a moment that you are in a foreign land, you are sick, you are desperate, but you have no clue whatsoever what people around you are talking. You don't know whether they are backbiting you or whether they are out to do something very bad to you. On the other hand sometimes the doctors and the nurses are totally frustrated when they can't communicate or are just guessing of what the problem might be. Then it is very rewarding to come in between and get the communication going and build a bridge and bring understanding. It is amazing how important language is and many a times we take it for granted that when we talk people will understand what we are saying.
Most of these people from Somalia never have learned any other language other than the one they sucked with their mothers milk. And they never chose to be refugees, they never wanted to leave home, but because of the war they had to and are now depending on the mercies of UN or some of the NGO's. Many times I really feel for our friends from those camps, and I am thanking God for our place which can offer great help for otherwise totally hopeless cases.
Our prayer still goes out to those in wartorn places like Somalia and Sudan and so many other African countries,

hallo,
an diesem Samstag abend bin ich noch kurz am reflektieren ueber das gute was in dieser Woche geschehen ist. Gerade eben war ich noch mit unserem Kinderchirurgen zusammen, der vor kurzem aus dem größten Flüchtlingslager in Afrika zurueckkam. Das Lager befindet sich im Nordosten Kenyas ganz nahe an der somalischen Grenze und beherbergt etwa 200.000 somalische Flüchtlinge. Der Arzt, selber noch recht jung, und noch nicht lang in Afrika, war voellig ueberwaeltigt von den menschlichen Tragoedien, die dort auf engstem Raum konzentriert sind. Man findet dort alles, von schlimmen Schusswunden hin zu Krebsgeschwueren, Brandwunden und was man sich sonst noch alles vorstellen kann. Der junge Arzt war mit einem Team von unserem Krankenhaus dort auf einem Einsatz, wo fast rund um die Uhr operiert wurde fuer etwa eine Woche. Die Operationen, die bessere Umgebung brauchen wurden dann zu uns verwiesen, d.h. wir werden die naechsten Monate wieder einen ungebrochenen Zuwachs an Patienten aus Somalia haben.
Wir schauen immer wieder auf diesen einzigartigen Platz, der unser Krankenhaus ist, und staunen darueber, wie dieses kleine Hospital zu einem Ort der Hoffnung fuer tausende von Somalis geworden ist.
Uebrigens zahlt die deutsche Regierung fuer die meisten Fluechtlinge die Krankenhausrechnung. GTZ ist der Arm der deutschen Regierung und ist mit UN Koerpern der wichtigste part in der Versorgung derer die aus ihrem Land geflohen sind.
Diese Woche hatte ich Gelegenheit bei einer Konferenz teilzunehmen wo alle die, die im Norden Kenias mit den kleinen Staemmen arbeiten, zusammenkommen. Wir waren alle ueberrascht zu sehen, wie viele doch Interesse an diesen Randgruppen haben. Wir haben uns verpflichtet in Zukunft mehr zusammenzuarbeiten und einander zu helfen, so weit dies moeglich ist.

Hi,
on this saturday night I want to look back at this week and see what many good things were in it. Actually just a few minutes ago I talked to my neighbour who is a childrens surgeon. He came back from one of the largest refugee centers in Africa which is located close to the Somaliborder in the northeastern part of Kenya. The camp houses around 200.000 Somalirefugees and is literally overflowing with new arrivals. As you know even from my reports on the ongoing civilwar in our neighbouring country the flow of desperate Somalis who have no choice but to run for their lives, continues pouring into our country. There our doctors operated almost round the clock, from tumors to gunshotwounds, burns and fractures and whatever you may think of. The need there is almost too much to comprehend. But many of the cases which were seen are now referred to our Hospital and there will be treated and much of it will be paid by the German government, through GTZ.
On a more positive note I want to mention that I was able to attend another one day conference where many players in the outreach to tribes specifically in Northern Kenya came together to strategize and brainstorm. We were all surprised to see how many different organisations and agencys are actively trying to do great things for those marginalized groups of people.
I came out encouraged and we are all looking forward to network and help one another in our different ministries.

Hier wieder nachrichten aus Kenia. Die Zeit fliegt nur so dahin, besonders jetzt wo wir kurz vor unserem Abflug nach Deutschland sind. Es ist noch nicht mal mehr ein Monat, bis Doerte und ich dann abfliegen. Hanna-Joy wird zum ersten mal in einem Internat schlafen. Bis jetzt hatte sie immer noch den Vorzug bei uns zuhause zu sein. Diese eine Woche wird sie bei ihren Freunden sein waehrend Benjamin bei seinem Schweizer Freund sein darf. Wir hoffen, dass die Kinder diese Zeit gut verkraften. Aber inzwischen sind sie hier fest etabliert und fuehlen sich sehr wohl.
Waehrend hier in Kenya der Frieden wieder relativ eingekehrt ist, einige Probleme gibt es noch mit der Rueckfuehrung der internen Fluechtlinge, richtet sich unser Augenmerk wieder verstaerkt auf Somalia. Dort intensiviert sich die Auseinandersetzung zwischen den Kraeften die dort herrschen. Wir schaetzen den Frieden umso mehr, nachdem wir so unmittelbar die Auswirkung von Gewalt und kriegsaehnlichen Zustaenden hier in diesem Land erlebt haben. Hier in Kenya waren es ja nur ein paar Monate, und nur so uns soviele Opfer, waehrend in Somalia der Krieg seit 18 Jahren vor sich hin wuetet und kein Ende in Sicht ist, und die Opfer inzwischen schon laengst nicht mehr gezaehlt werden. Es ist ein vergessener Konflikt, die Welt interessiert sich kaum dafuer und dennoch geht das Leiden weiter mit zunehmender Gewalt. Wir bekommen fast taeglich Opfer dieser Gewalt, die sich doch tausend Kilometer weit von uns abspielt, in unser Krankenhaus. Einer unserer Freunde, der mit einer Kugel im Bauch zu uns kam, wurde von seinem Freund angeschossen. Er beklagt den Zustand seines Volkes, das voellig im Dunkeln ist, und nur noch von Hass und Gewalt regiert wird. Der Strom von Fluechtlingen reisst nicht ab. Manche kommen nur zur Behandlung, muessen aber zurueck, weil die Familienangehoerigen noch dort sind. Andererseits gewoehnt man sich offensichtlich an alles. Selbst die taeglichen Bombardierungen koennen zur Normalitaet werden, und die Vergewaltigungen und die willkuerlichen Toetungen usw.
Viele sind traumatisiert und brauchen dringend Hilfe, um ueber die schlimmen Dinge hinweg zu kommen. Wir beten dass der Koenig des Friedens bald kommt und einen neuen Anfang schenkt,

Hi,
time is flying by, especially now as we are getting ready to go to Germany in less than a month from now. Dorothy and I will be going on 7th of June, Hanna-Joy will be in the dorm here at RVA and Benjamin will stay with friends here on the station. For Dorothy it will be only one week to be out of Africa until she joins the kids again.
Things are cool here in Kenya and our focus is more and more directed towards Somalia. We are grateful to be able to live in a peaceful nation again, even after it looked terrible for a short while. We just so appreciate peace and what it means for a nation to have peace and freedom. Living in fear and not knowing when the killers may strike is just terrorizing. The short period of terror Kenya has experienced in those few months early this year was a shock for the entire region of East Africa. Just imagine that Somalia is going through this now for 18 years. People are traumatized and hurt for a lifetime. The thing is, that you get used to almost everything, that means that even war and killings and rape, becomes normal, it becomes the order of the day.
One of our friends here in the hospital, was shot in the lower abdomen by his colleague for no apparent reason. He spent many months in different Hospitals and was already given up. Yet, one doctor told him that he is gonna live and come out of this. He testified to me, that the only thing he has seen in that country is darkness and hate. Life has become worth nothing and people don't value this precious thing God has given to us. The power of the gun is ruling in so many places in Somalia. People are literally crying out to God to restore that nation once again.

Hallo,
Herzlichen Gruss aus Kenya. Gestern war ich mit einem unserer Aerzte wieder
im Somalistadtviertel um unsere kleine Klinik zu betreiben. Gestern hatte
alles einen etwas anderen Geschmack als sonst. Das kam daher, dass die Nacht
vorher das Haus eines Al-Shabab Leiters, eine terroristische Gruppe, von
einer amerikanischen Rakete beschossen wurde und alles was in und um das
Haus war zerstoert hatte. Das Haus befindet sich in eienr kleinen zentral
somalischen Stadt, und die Rakete kam von einem amerikanischen Kriegschiff
draussen im indischen Ozean. Man hat es wohl schon mehrere male versucht,
diesen Mann zu toeten, dieses mal haben sie die Praezision der
Satellitentechnik genutzt und mitten in der Nacht geschossen. Als wir dann
im Somalistadtviertel waren, kamen einige recht unangenehme Bemerkungen
ueber Weisse und vor allem Amerikaner. Der Arzt, mit dem ich unterwegs war,
ist Amerikaner. Einer stand auf und war sehr ungehalten und sagte er wuerde
nach Somalia gehen und im Jihad fuer Allah kaempfen und wenn noetig sterben.
Aber insgesamt haben wir dort einen sehr guten Namen und unser Dienst dort
wird im allgemeinen sehr geschaetzt, und der Name unseres Krankenhauses hat
einen sehr guten Ruf vor allem in der somalischen Bevoelkerung.
Den Tag vorher fuhr ich mit einigen Kollegen nach den Sueden von Kenia an
die tansanische Grenze, wo zwei Staedte die urspruenglich den Massai
gehoerten, inzwischen fast ganz von Somalis dominiert sind. Viele tausend
Somalis sind in diese Staedte immigriert und haben innerhalb weniger Jahre
das Gesicht der Stadt total veraendert. Die eine Stadt hat inzwischen 6
Moscheen und Madrassas. Das Ziel unserer Reise war, die lokalen Pastoren zu
ermutigen ihre neuen Nachbarn mit dem Wort Gottes und der Liebe Gottes zu
erreichen, anstatt sie mit den alten Waffen zu bekaempfen. Denn es kam
inzwischen schon zu einigen Kleinkriegen, die zu sehr unguten Gefuehlen
zwischen den beiden Gruppen gefuehrt haben. Massai gehen sehr gut mit Pfeil
und Bogen und Speeren um, und scheuen sich in der Regel auch nicht diese zu
benutzen, wenn es darauf ankommt. Wir wollen die Kirche ermutigen die Waffen
des Geistes zu benutzen und ihre Nachbarn lieben zu lernen, auch wenn die
Kulturen so verschieden sind.

Just came back from our clinic in the Somalisection of Nairobi. It was interesting to be there the day after the bombing of a town in central Somalia. The american missile attack targeted a subgroup of Al Qaeda and hit the house where its leader was residing. During the raid 9 people died including the leader of the group. We could feel quite a bit of tension especially with an american in our group. One said to the doctor, thanks for treating my mom, but I am going to Somalia and fight in the Jihad there, and die in the cause of Allah. He was a very angry man, and one can see that people are torn, they want to like us for what we are doing, but in the same time they should hate us, for whom we represent. It is a difficult situation for many. The country is in pieces and there is no immediate hope for a political solution for the countries problems.
One day earlier we went down to the border of Tansania, a small town called Namanga. There are actually two towns which are almost completely taken over by Somalis. We went down there in order to encourage local Pastors to see this as an opportunity for them to reach the people with the Gospel. The local Massai population including the leadership of the towns are intimated by the massive growth and aggression of the Somali influx and with it the growth of Islam in that area. Some of the indigenous people started to fight the recent immigrants with weapons only to realize that this is not the right way to go. Over time the locals also saw that Islam is indeed a foreign religion for them and they started taking their kids out of their schools and refused their girls to be married by Muslim men. In a sense it is quite impressive in what speed these people are moving into a place and have the capability of adapting to a new place and almost colonise an area. We are praying now that the local pastors and christians would lose their fear and go out boldly and share the love of God with these new immigrants to their land and would use the weapons God has given to us, that is love and prayer.

Ich moechte Euch kurz von unserem Trip in das Somalistadtviertel von Nairobi
erzaehlen, der gestern stattfand. Wir machen diese Trips ja regelmaessig
alle 2 Wochen. Wir sind da in einer kleinen Klinik und Somalipatienten
werden auf verschiedenste Symptome hin behandelt. Wenn sie intensivere
Behandlung brauchen, werden sie in unsere Krankenhaus ueberwiesen.
Gestern hatten wir fast ausschliesslich Patienten, die erst seit wenigen
Tagen oder Wochen in Kenya sind. Fast alle sind vor den andauernden Kaempfen
in der Haupstadt Mogadishu geflohen. Viele von ihnen sind wirklich
traumatisiert und die Traurigkeit ihrer Augen erzaehlt von den schlimmn
Dingen, die sie in ihrer Heimat gesehen haben. Dort gibt es keine Aerzte
mehr, sie sind entweder geflohen oder umgebracht worden. Die Stadt ist
inzwischen fast leer, viele ihrer Bewohner sind geflohen und leben irgendwo
ausserhalb unter einfachsten Unterkuenften. Gestern hat BBC berichtet, dass
die aethiopischen Truppen eine Moschee in Mogadishu ueberfallen haben und
die Kehlen derer, die anwesend waren, aufgeschlitzt hat.
Betet fuer Somalia in diesen Tagen, das Land ist inzwischen voellig
zerfallen und seine Bewohner kennen nur noch das Handwerk mit der Waffe.

Heimatstadt Belet Weyn in Somalia umgebracht wurde. Wir kannten diesen Mann
als einen Bruder, der von ganzem Herzen seinem Herrn und seinem Volk dienen
wollte. Moege das Blut der vielen Christen in diesem Land bald zu einer
reichen Ernte fuehren.

Hallo,
wir kamen heute nachmittag von unserer Konferenz zurueck, die ich kurz
erwaehnt hatte. Es war klasse mit vielen Arbeitern aus allen Teilen der Welt
zusammen zu sein und sich wieder neu auf den Dienst auszurichten. So ein
Treffen dient immer wieder dazu, zu sehen was laueft, wer ist wo, wo tut
sich was neues auf. Leider war die erste Botschaft, die wir bekommen haben,
die von der Ermordung eines unserer Bekannten. Ein Somali, der viele Jahre
in England lebte, wollte nach seiner Pensionierung zurueck um seinen Leuten
zu helfen. Er startete in seiner Geburtsstadt eine Grundschule und hat im
Laufe der Zeit einge Lehrer rekrutiert. Was auch immer genau ablief, er kam
ins Kreuzfeuer der islamischen Milizen und wurde durch einen Kopfschuss
getoetet, und mit ihm zusammen seine 3 Mitarbeiter. Das war ein grosser
Schock fuer alle von uns, denn viele kannten Daud als einen soliden und
aufrechten Mann, der seinem Gott treu diente. Als wir ihm letztes Jahr noch
gegenuebersassen erzaehlte er von der Gefahr in die er sich begibt, wenn er
in seine Stadt geht. Er konnte nicht einmal seine eigene Bibel mit ins Land
nehmen aus Furcht, dass ihm das als antiislamische Propaganda ausgelegt
werden koennte.
Und dennoch blieb er seinem Ruf treu und tat was recht war und hat
Barmherzigkeit geuebt.
So traurig wie diese Ereignisse auch sind, hat das viele von uns noch mehr
motiviert weiterzumachen, Gutes zu tun und Barmherzigkeit zu ueben. Eine
Frau aus Minnesota in den USA hat uns sehr ermutigt, denn sie kam zurueck
nach Mogadishu, ihre Heimatstadt, um dort den Fluechtlingen zu dienen.
Somalia steht einem riesigen internen Fluechtlingsproblem gegenueber. Die
Haupstadt ist fast leer, der Grossteil der Bevoelkerung ist ins Umland
geflohen. Durch die anhaltenden Kaempfe ist es sehr schwer fuer die NGO's
ausreichend Nahrungsmittel oder Zeltplanen ins Land zu schaffen. Aerzte gibt
es fast keine mehr. Sie sind entweder umgebracht, oder haben das Land
rechtzeitig verlassen. Die Situation dort ist von Normalitaet meilenweit

Hi,
even tonight, I just wanted to post you on what is happening here in our part of East Africa. We could never believe that our beloved people would start such a hatred which is being seen these past few days. The point really is, that the trouble hasn't started just now, but over the past decades there were tribal clashes which costed peoples lives, but issues were never really addressed. It looks as if people were just waiting for a chance to revenge and vent their anger out. I am still pleased that their are people of God who truly look for repentance and reconciliation and true and lasting peace. And I honestly believe that God listens to the multitude of saints who cry out to their God and besiege the throne of God for deliverance from the ugly beast of tribalism and hatred so that people can live together in peace again.
Just last night a letter was circulating in our station where again hatred was incited and the truth is that people are extremely scared. Extra policemen are patroulling around our station just to secure the area and take care of the minority tribes who live around here.
Today it was Benjamins birthday and he had a wonderful day with friends visiting from Nakuru and a sleepover and so many other things. He turned 11 today.

Hier wieder ein kurzes update ueber die Situation hier in Kenya. Vor kurzem kam ich aus Nairobi zurueck, ich hatte Freunde frueh am morgen zum Flughafen gebracht und dann noch unseren Jungen, Abdi, abgeholt. D.h. ich musste doch ziemlich quer durch die Haupstadt fahren. Ich war wirklich erstaunt, dass man relativ wenig bemerken konnte, von der Gewalt die noch vor ein, zwei Tagen in der Stadt geherrscht hat. Es war ruhig und friedlich, auch waren kaum Spuren zu sehen, die auf das Chaos hinweisen wuerden.
Fuer morgen war eigentlich wieder eine groessere Kundgebung geplant, aber die Oppostion hat sie dann doch selber abgeblasen. Momentan sieht es so aus, als ob es doch noch zu einer grossen Koalition kommen koennte, falls die beiden Rivalen zu einer Einigung kommen.
Das Land hat sehr unter der Gewalt gelitten, und leidet immer noch sehr stark. Interessanterweise ist kenia schon aus den Schlagzeilen verschwunden. Zurueck bleiben zigtausende von internen Fluechtlingen, denen buchstaeblich alles genommen wurde. Die meisten von ihnen muessen von ganz vorne wieder anfangen. Das was sie ueber viele Jahre muehsam aufgebaut haben, ging vor ihren Augen in Flammen auf. Das ist eine sehr bittere Wahrheit. Schoen finde ich bei vielen Gespraechen mit Angehoerigen des Stammes, der am meisten betroffen ist, dass sie nicht zurueckschlagen wollen, sondern wirklich Frieden wollen. Es wird sehr, sehr viel gebetet und die Betroffenheit ist buchstaeblich anfassbar. Keiner konnte sich so ein Desaster in diesem Land vorstellen.
Hier im Hospital hat sich die Lage normalisiert, Somalis kommen wieder in grosser Zahl zu uns, nachdem die Strassensperren aufgehoben waren.
